The following is the annual report of the South Canterbury Branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals which will be submitted to members at the annual general meeting which will be held in the IC.F.C.A. Board room, Beswick Street, this morning, at 11 o’clock. It is to be regretted that our efforts to secure a Feredatiou of .Societies have proved abortive owing to the fact that three of the largest Societies, for reasons best known to themselves, declined to join in. <i*uirelies, newspapers and schools in the Dominion were circularised with the result that numerous sermons and lectures were .delivered, and articles circulated dealing with the subject of kindness to animals. This must have, good results. The thanks of the society arc due l:o those in our district, who. at Afr Forbes' request assisted in carrying out the object of the week. “Finance —It is pleasing to report that the finances of Dio Society arc in a very sound position. The assets amount ■to £3-13 3s 4<l as against £3OO 9s Id for the previous year. Of this amount, the Speedily Beruiesl of Cloo and an allotment out of our income £IOO, arc iri-
rested in debentures. As the Society is dependent upon the goodwill of the public for fts revenue it is deemed advisable to establish a capital fund so that a. regular income may be assured from interest, on investments. “The thanks of the Society are due to t.lie ladies who worked so hard to make the Street Day a success. "In conclusion I have to thank Die Police for very valuable assistance, our inspector for his energy and' interest in the Society's work, and the Committee for their loyal and willing sup-
port during my term of office.” I The inspector’s report says:—“l have much pleasure in submitting mv report for the year ended August 31, 1926, and trust that the same will meet with your approval. During the year I have visited most of the districts of South Canterbury, and am pleased to report on the good condition of stock, owing to the very favourable season. I desire to acknowledge the assistance 1 have received from the public in reporting cases of cruelty. It is pleasing to feel the work of the Society is being more appreciated each year. There have been 146 cases attended to this year ns shown in my detailed report. In conclusion I take this opportunity of thanking the secretary and committee for Die courtesy and kindness shown to me while executing the affairs of tlie Society as inspector.” The balance sheet shows: Heceipts: Balance in Post Office Savings Bank hrpiiglit forward £IOO Us 9d. interest £ls 6s 4d. takings on Street Day £ll7 6s lid, subscriptions and donations £64 17s 6d. donations inspector’s bonus fund £1 10s; total £299 12s Gd.
