DIPHTHERIA.
EPIDEMIC IN ASHBURTON. By Tetejrrapti—Press Associaticr ASHBURTON, August 20. The necessity for definite and immediate action in Tegard to the epidemic of diphtheria in Ashburton was emphasised at a special meeting of the local branch of the Plunket Society this afternoon. The president, Mrs A. Grigg, eaid Uiei'o had' been a lot of discussion and feeling about the outbreak, and members of the society felt very strongly about the matter. It was their duty to protect the children, and something should be done to stir up public feeling. Mrs H. I/. Baker said slie was afraid the public did not realise the seriousness of the position. Ashburton had .'pent a tremendous amount ot money in installing a drainage system, yet they had an opidemio such as the present. The matter should ho brought before the headquarters of the. Health Department, ■as it was beyond the s'cmio of th° local health inspector. With conditions ns at present one dreaded to think what might happen in the hot summer months. Mrs Barker moved: “That the branch l osk the Health Department to giyo an assurance that an investigation will he carried out in Ashburton immediateThc motion was not seconded. On the motion of Mrs Barker, seconded by Mrs Barnett, it was decided to waif’on the Mayor to ascertain what measure.-, should lie taken.
