ALLEGED MURDER.
MAKIKIHI FATALITY. THE ACCUSED IN COURT. Charged that on July 29, at Alakikihi, he did unlawfully murder one Duval Earl England, Owen Joseph Francis McKee, a labourer, aged 39 years, residing at Makikihi, appeared before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., at yesterday's sitting of the Timaru AlagisArate’s Court. Senior-Sergeant Fahey applied for a remand until August 19th. Accused said that at that juncture he would ask what facilities would be afforded him for procuring legal assistance? His AA'orsliip explained that the matter would he inquired into by the police, and if accused was without means, the Crown would provide for his de>nce. In this country, said his Woi'S Kv, if a man charged with so grave ail offence, is destitute, and unable to procure legal assistance, counsel would be provided for him at the Supreme Court hearing, but not at the lower Court where no dexeiice would be entered into. Accused said that he only had £2 or £3.on him when arrested, and that he had no other means. Senior-Sergeant Fahey said that the position in regard to accused’s defence had been explained to him. The accused: "I am not guilty, and I want to get it over as soon as possible.” ... His AVorship: “The police will have to have time to prepare the case, but they assure me- they will not hang it up unduly.” The remand until August. 19 was then granted.
