NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special to the “Herald.”) CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. 11. The weather was very cold when rocinjf was rusuiuod ut Addington todfi> - a biUnc easterly wind making its presence felt. The track was in fairly good order, the effects of the rfiin during the night having been neutralised by a couple of hours' rolling by several bal-loon-tyred nne 'I lie big race was annexed bv the erratic Countryman, "ho just managed to stall off a strong clial-ler.o-e bv Talaro. Peterwah was responsible for an attractive effort in the trotters’ race; but the star turn of the dav was provided by Great Bingen, wlio conceded starts to a big and classy field in tho final event on the card. There wore two accidents during tl-e afternoon, one. resulting in the dcstinotion of Daphne YY’ildwood, and the oilier in serious injury to the driver of Nipper. The attendance was •considerably larger than on .Saturday. There was an appreciable increase in the totalisator turnover.

ANOTHER CHANCE. Backers decided to give Happy. Rosa, and Guy Parrish another eh a nee. in the Improvers’ Handicap, both being entrusted with a- good deal more money than Lazarus, who was third choice. Several of the field failed to go otl cor-l-ectlv among them being Some Jazz. Randolph, Yoi’fig Carbine, Engagement, Happv Rosa, Frisco Beau, and Guv ParriHi. The Toff, Lady Fan, Mount Roval. Litt’e Logan and Kola Boy eonmrisecl the leading division for the first'mile. At. the tanks the last time round Kola Boy took charge, but he broke up badly on the bend, leaving Little Logan, The Toff and Guy Parrish in charge. Little Logan was well clear at the top of the straight, and won hy half a dozen lengths from Mount’Royal,' who was two length,s in front of Guy Parrish. Bingenette was fourth, another length away, with The Toff next. Little Logan was coupled with Randolph. Guy Parrish trotted an excellent race after he had settled down, and has only to go right to win. VERDICT FOB BRUCE. Bruce, Mawhariti and Daphne Wildwood. were the popular selections for the mile saddle'. At the end of two fur'ongs. Homer, Mawlmviti, Bruce, Double Event and Nagol Pointer were almost in line. Just before leaving the straight., Homer fell and brought down Daphne Wildwood. At the back Mawhariti lost his place', and nearing tho tanks Bruce was clear of Maearanda and Dalineny, with Double Event next.

Bruce, Dalmeny and Alacaranda ran round the bend together, and a slogging finish ended in Bruce gaining the verdict by half a length from Dalmeny, who beat Alacaranda by a noc.k. Double Event was three lengths further back. Daphne YY’ildwood appeared to meet with serious injury, and had to be removed on a hurdle. Subsequently she was destroyed.

KING GEORGE HANDICAP. For'the King George Handicap Delavan’s Quest was in slightly better demand than Downcast, third selection, being Countryman and Glenelg (coupled). The whole field moved off well except Roicole, who lost over three seconds before settling down, and Countryman. Downcast, Talent and Harbour Light aero tin- early leaders, and passing the stand the first time, this trio were just m front of Delavan s Quest, who travelled very fast at tho bend, and Logamvood. Going along the back, the order was Downcast, Glcne’g, Logaiiwocd, Talent, Delavan s Quest, and Countryman, and there was no change as they raced past the mile pest, which the leader reached in 2.19. With a lap to go, Logamvood headed Downcast and Glenelg, who were followed by Countryman. At this point Dclavan's Quest began to weaken, and lloicolc put in a dash round the field. At the back Glenelg and Roico'o were just in front of Countryman and boganwood, with Alan o’ YYar travelling fast on the outside. Glenelg lost bis place at the bend, leaving Countryman and Roicolo to show the "ay to tlie straight. Countryman drew out a. furloim from home, but almost immediately Talaro got clear, and coming with a groat burst, the first-day winner just fai'ed to catch Countryman, who won bv a short bead Alan o’ YY’ar was four or five lengths away, just in front ot Roi-olc with Loganuood and Dreamalion next. The feature of the race was the running ot Roicole, "ho could scarcely have been beaten had he commenced smartly. Acron went well lor a mile, but faded away altcnvards.

BELGIUM HANDICAP. Despite the fact that Tom lliumo bad about sixteen stone in the sulky, the North Canterbury horse was made a short-priced favourite for the Belgium Hand.cap, with tho Southland marc, .Moor Ohiincs, next in rccjucst. Tom Thumh did not begin well and lost over two seconds before be got into the hopples, and Lord Bingen cracked up soon alter the start. YY’uirua made play from YY’illiam the Great, Uncle Bert and Rapier, and passing the stand YY’airua, Uncle Bert. William the Groat, Rapier, Pinevale, and Afoor Chimes were bunched. There was l.ttle change at the mile, except that Moor Chimes had run into third place. Beginning tho final circuit, Uncle Bert headed AY'airua, William the Groat, Pinevale, YJoor Chimes. Blue Star and Tom Thumb The favourite moved up fust at the back, and at the last bend the leaders were' YY’illh-m tho Great, Wairua, Tom Thumb, Uncle Bert- and Blue Star. YY’illiam the Great was well' clear at the distance, but Tom Thumb conic with an irresistib’e run and won decisively by a couple oi lengths. lifidy Embrace also finished strongly and collected third money three lengths behind. YY’illiam the Great, YVairua, Uncle Bert and Blue Star wore almost in line for fourth 'place. Tom Thumb is trained and driven by an amateur. Til professional hands 1m might easily develop into a cup horse.

A FIELD OF TWENTY. A crowded field of twenty lined up for tlie slow mile and a quarter event, a favourite being iound in Harold Thorpe, with Yenot host backed ot the remainder. St. Fillan tailed to go kway, and Silk Thread settled Ins chance by galloping lor a furlong. iYera’s Do!', Macamhi, Kibiringi and 'Billy Whizz set the pace lor the first six furlongs, with. King Abdallah and Pan Yan close Up. Pearl Coronado moved up at the back, and at the tanks was in third place. Rounding the bend, Pmrl Coronado joined Vera’s Doll, with Pan Yan and B'lly Whizz just behind. Pearl Coronado drew away in the straight and won nicely by a length from Granite City, who- put in a great run after getting free irom the ruck. Bily Whizz was another length away, with Harold Thorpe a- fair fourth. Just before leaving the straight, Billy Whizz was going unsteadily and- appeared to interfere with Honour Bright, who was going well'at the time. Honour Bright fell and brought down Nipper, whoso driver received, a nasty blow from Silk Thread’s sulky. FAVOURITE WIN'S. The Gisborne : owncd American trottor, Peterwah, was backed down to a short price in the Avon Handicap, carrying a thousand rickets more than the Young Blake—Peter McKinney bracket. Young Blake and Engagement both impaired their prospects by mistakes at the start. Koraki took up tlu running from Audobell, and after going half a mile, the pair were four lengths in front of Peter McKinney, Pc tt rwah and Blue ’Thorpe. Red Oak made a forward move at the back, and leaving the straight- for the last time Audobell, Peter McKinney, Peterwah, Voting Blake, Koraki and Red Oak were in c ose order. Peterwah and Peter .McKinney took charge with half a mile to go, but the last named dropped out at the tanks, where Young Blake, Audobell and Red Oak were Pcterwah’s nearest attendants. Voting Blake left his feet on the curve, leaving Peterwah to turn lor home well clear of Audobell and Rod Oak. The favourite was never troubled to win by three lengths from Audobell, who beat Red Oak bv half a length. Red Oak b roke just before reaching the winning post. Maugoutu was three lengths further back, ju.st clear of Engagement, who showed a. lot of speed' after she settled down. Peterwah registered a shade under his handicap time, on a track which was slower Ilian normal. C VNTERBI’RY HANDICAP.

Sea Pearl touched a short price iu the Canterbury Handicap, the other fa need candidate being Taurckareka, who looked hardly ready. Taurekaroka dwelt at the start and lost two or three .seconds, and Bing Boy declined to pace. Lonamhor and Peter Bingen qu.ckly established a good lead from Kosio Nut and Silk Thread, and at the end of half a mile this lot were leading from Dalnahinc. There was not much change at the mile, except that Doctor Dillon had worked into a handy position. Peter Bingen went to the front with a lap to go, and at the tanks was five lengths clear ol Golden Devon, Doctor Dilhni and Lenamhor. Silk 'l'llread, who had broken six furlongs from home, was coming on again, hut Peter Bingen, although lie tired in the straight, had sufficient in reserve to claim the verdict hv a bare length, from Doctor Dillon, who dcleated Silk I’ll rend by throequarlcrs of a. length. Golden Devon was a. fair fourth. Doctor Dillon recorded 4.30 1-5 —an excellent go on a siowish track. Taurekarcka made up ground in the middle stages, and then fell hack, hut Sea Pearl gave her backers no . encouragement at any stage of the proceedings. A BRILLIANT FI F.LIT One of the most brilliant fields over seen in a spring race faced the starter in the Speedwav Handicap, which was run in a bad light, half an hour behind the advertised time. Bell Harold and AVaitaki Girl were entmsted with the big investments, with in most request, of the other fifteen, \\aitaki Girl and .Logan Chief missed the jump off, and took no serious part in the contest. Brentloc streaked to tho front from Bonny Logan, Alain Voyage and Becky Bogan, and this lot went past the stand attended by Prince Pointer. Ahuriri and Jack Potts. Main Vovage broke leaving the .straight, but the other live held their positions until three fulongs from home; then Prince Pointer ran into cecond place behind Brentloc, and these two led into the staight. Brentloc hold his place until two or three strides from the post, where Groat Bingen, who had come

with a brilliant dash on the extremes nek away. Ahunn, Black Adnmal, Bell Harold, and one yor two' more were almost in line withdum. f his was Great Bingen’s first outing .since Ins Wesiralian trip,. and it is evident tli.it tho champion luis lost none ot his bnllianey.
