NEWS AND NOTES.

A novelty in the way of a candle afternoon tea was the means of attracting some 250 persons during Wednesday afternoon at the Stafford Tearooms. The candle afternoon was introduced in one of London’s foremost restaurants some five years ago, and was such an unqualified success that it has been in vogue ever since. Wednesday was not the first time that this novelty tvas held in Timaru, but the Stafford Tea Roonis certainly have never looked more inviting than they did on this occasion. The multi-coloured shades covering the candles threw a soft light on the prettily-coloured table coverings, this combining harmoniously with the gold laco and floral curtaining effects, in creating a delightful atmosphere. Adding to the beauty of the surroundings were tiie several Grecian and Italian statues which Mr Nicol was fortunate enough to secure at the Dunedin Exhibition. These were artistically arranged around the spacious rooms, and the lighting effects on some, were a special feature. Throughout the afternoon the music from the orchestra added materially to the pleasure of all, the programme being specially selected. Of such a successful nature was the afternoon, that the management have decided to hold a similar function at an early date, when probably the waitresses will be attired in Chinese or other national costume
