In the House of Representatives, in reply to a question whether penny postage could not he inaugurated to coincide with the opening of Canberra, the Postmaster-General (Hon. W. GGibson), said the impracticability of this being done would be seen when die mentioned that since he caine into office new awards had added £1,000)OOC to the Department’s wages bill. He said if Australia’s telephone charges were the same as made . liy private companies in the United States the revenue to the Department would be £3,000,000 greater than now.
