On Saturday night Mrs R. F. Hill, Mrs J. P. Peter, and the Misses Howell, garb a seventeen-table progressive. bridge party in the-Stafford Tearooms, which were prettily decorated with chrysanthemums. The first prize was won by Mrs R. 11. Joyce, the second by Mrs English, and the consolation by Mrs K. Inman. Mrs Hill , wore a black lace frock and a pink fringed shawl; Mrs Peter, black satin and ninon; Miss Nancy Howell, black georgette and silver lace;'Miss Bessie Howell, black embossed marjocain; Mrs Ben Howell, black georgette and fringed green shawl. i The marriage took place recently •in England of Joan, older daughter of Mr and Mrs E. P. LeVlen, of Wellington, and grand-daughter of the late Mr Robert Laery, to PaymasterEieut. PI. Prevett, Royal Navy; now serving in H.M.S. Conquest. Lieut. Prevett was for throe years in New Zealand waters in H.M.S. Chatham. Last Friday afternoon, Sirs J. Cross, Rhodes Street, entertained the president and a number of ladies of the Woodlands Street Methodist Guild at the Stafford Tearooms, in honour of Mrs H. J. Odell, of Christ-
church, who is at present visiting Timaru. . The tables were artistically decorated with bronze chrysanthemums and autumn tinted leaves. On Monday evening the members of the Timaru High School Old Girls’ Association held a social gathering In the school assembly hall. A pleasant evening was spent •■in- games, dancing and competitions, and musical items were given by Misses Pat. Lynch, Olive Greenall, and Eileen Elliott. A fancy dress “Kohanga” is being arranged for Monday, July 6 th. In the Aeolian Hall, London, recently, Miss Stella Murray gave her first public recital since her return from New Zealand. A cable message reports that Miss Murray received an enthusiastic audience, which completely filled the hall, and that the newspaper criticisms of the concert, were most complimentary. After the recital, Madame Ada Crossley gave ,a reception in honour of the New Zealand contralto. The engagement is announced between Lieut. Peregrine R. Dearden, R.N (retired), son of the late Mr P. R. Dearden and Mrs Dearden, of Sandford, Avening, Glos., and Nancy Margaret Stuart, younger daughter of the late Mrs Josephine Burt and Walter Burt, of 34 Lowndes Street, Lieut. Dearden was saved from H.M.S. Queen Mary at the Battle of Jutland, and was captured by the Germans. He lias a number of relatives and friends in New Zealand, who will be interested Lo hear of his engagement.
