The Timaru Borough solicitors have been instructed to take action against a local resident who admitted having sold meat in the borough without being licensed to do so, also to having sold i meat in the borough that had not been j killed at tho borough abattoir. j Throe private omnibus owners, whoso ' applications for licenses were rejected I by the Timaru Borough Council, have given notice, through their solicitors, of their intention to appeal against the Council’s decision. Tho Council was also advised last night that the bus owners now operating in Timaru were hold covered by a leading insurance company, for passenger risk. - Councillor Kelly expressed tho hope, at last night’s meeting of tho Timaru Borough Council, that any work the Council might be able to provide for the unemployed would be put in hand as soon as possible. The Mayor said i tho matter had not been overlooked. I and it was decided that the matter he i considered at the next meeting of the 1 Works Committee. Councillor Hay said that work could he found by putting a second gang on to water reticulation work, but most of the unemployed at present in Timaru were young, single men, for whom the Council was not called upon to cater. The second evening of the Young People’s Society -was held in Trinity Hall on Monday evening. The subject for the night was “Set and Impromptu Speeches” by the members, which proved very interesting to (he large assemblage ‘present. Mr J. H. Healey was in the chair. Good speeches were given by the followingmembers: Miss J. King, Miss Scott, Miss R. McDonald, Mr J. P. Boyd, Mr G. Bowie, and Mr E. C. Hetherington. The impromptu speeches Were on interesting topics, and some brought forth peals of laughter from the audience. Those who delivered the impromptu speeches were:—Mr J. Tavener, Mr J. P. Boyd, and Mr J. Freeman, and Mr J. Atkinson. Mr Miller spoke of the high efficiency of the speakers. After the speeches a very enjoyable pup of tea was handed round by the members. The next meeting of the Y.P.S. 1 is to take the form of a musical evening. A reputation for supplying high quality tools at bedrock prices, has been acquired by the Progressive Hardware Store.
