MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

(Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.-M.) TTMARU—-MONDAY, JUNE 14. Arthur Gordon Knowles was fined £1 and costs for knowingly permitting a riiotor vehicle to bo used without a license. Alexander Swain, charged with using an unlicensed motor vehicle, was convicted and ordered to pay costs.

' BORROWING A CAR. Thomas Gibson, a seaman on the s.s. Hororata, was charged with unlawfully and without colour of right, converting to liis own use a motor car, the property of Frederick Thomas Bonham. A chargo of damaging Government property to the extent of 15s was also preferred. Senior-Sergeant Fahey stated that the owner of the ear had left it outside a garage, and in his absence, the car disappeared. At the same time a complaint was received that an intoxicated man was attempting to drive a car in Strathallan Street. Constable AVoarne took .the man in charge, and on arrival vat the police station; it was reported that the car had been taken from the garage. Nothing was known of accused other than that he was a ship’s fireman employed on the s.s. Hororata, and that lie was a native of Scotland. Accused stated that' lie came out of a hotel with other members of th* crew who, seeing the car, suggested that they drive down to tlie ship in it. Accused refused the invitation to “come aboard” tlie car, and after his mates had done with it, lit jai attempting to take it back where it came from when a. constable arrived on the scene and arrested him. He was intoxicated at the time. Constable A\ r earno stated that there were no other, men in the vicinity at the time Tho accused was sitting on the driver’s scat, and the engine was running.' AA’hen he arrived on the scene the accused was attempting to work tho gears. _ . . ~ A representative from the vessel s agents, who was present Stated that the captain was prepared to pay a. fine if a. monetary penalty was inflicted. •Xcensed was convicted and ordered to pay 15s, damage done to Government property, and on the . othe# charge was fined £B, in default fourteen days’ imprisonment.
