Mr A. Lindsay was a- passenger by the express for tho south yesterday. Mr H. Kennedy left on a business visit to AYellington yesterday. The Hon. R. A. Wright, Minister of Education, passed through Timaru yesterdaj- on his way to Dunedin. Mr E. A. Fitzgerald, of_Tima.ru, left yesterday on a visit to his niotliei' in Men- South Wales. Messrs R. Stewart and D. Stewart, South Canterbury representatives in tho South Island Rugby team, left Timaru for Wellington yesterday. It was decided at last night’s meeting of those interested in Shopping AVecS to send a. letter of .sympathy to Mr AY. Mcßride, in his illness. At a meeting of those interested in Shopping Week last evening, a motion of sympathy was passed with the family of the Unto Mr D. Aflrtue. Alt- T. Hughes (Geraldine), and Mr J. Maze (Pleasant Point) will retire Ire n (fluxion of time from the Canterbury Education Board on August 11. Air T. M. Wilford, who is at present i’i England, will remain there for some Lttlc time longer, on the advice of his doctor. Ho will not return to New Zealand in time for the coming session of Parliament. The friends of tlie acting-town clerk, Air C. J. Moore, will _ regret to .earn that he is at present indisposed. Air Moore took a. bad turn at the office yesterday morning, and had to go home. ‘ Mr A. L. Gee, formerly Borough clerk at Riccarton, has been appointed acting-town clerk of limaru.
Tlie Prime Alinister (the Hon. J. G. Coates), the Hon. F. J. llolloston. and the Hon. AY. Nosworthy will receive a deputation from the South Canterbury Power Board this morning. Tho deputation, consisting of the- chairman of the Board (Mr J. Kennedy) and the jjayor of Timaru (Air G. J. AA’allace) left 'limaru by the express yesterday. Prior to the commencement of the annual meeting of the Timaru Licensing Committee yesterday, the chairman t.Ah- E. D. Mosley, S.M.) extended a hearty welcome to Air G. llastie, J.P., on liis appointment to the committee. Air Alosley said that ho was certain that Air Hastie would prove a very active member and a valuable acquisition to the committee. Air Walter! Raymond, on behalf of the Licensed ARctuallers’ Association, also joined in extending a welcome to the newly elected member.
At yesterday's meeting of the- TinWru Licensing Committee, reference to the retirement of Air AY. Evans was made, hv the chairman (Air E. SAI ) All- Aloslev said that the committee regretted very much that- Air Evans had seen fit to-retire from further activity m that direction. Alit Evans said the chairman, had been a most, energetic member and while regretting that ha could net see lus wiv clear to continue office, he trusted that lie woil'd long be snared to continue the interest he. had always shown in the welfare of the community. On behalf of the licensed victuallers, Mr AA'alter Raymond also expressed rc„ret at Mr Evans’ retirement, stating that tho splendid work put into the affairs of the committee hv Air Evans was fully recognised by fill concerned.
