SPEEDING UP.
To the Editor of the “Timaru Herald.” Sir,—A lot was hoard not long ago about the speeding up of mixed trains by the Railway Department. On Saturday night a number of visitors to Oamaru were treated to a demonstration of what this moans. The evening train, which was advertised to have uamaru for Timaru at 5.37, had made such wonderful progress that at Studholme, 25 miles on its journey, it was passed by the special for Christchurch, which left Oamaru at 7.5. Passengers by the “slow” train' were advised J to detrain at Studholme and complete their trip on the special. Just what time the ordinary train reached Timaru I cannot say, but it was still at Studholme at something after 8 p.m., its average for the first twentyfivo miles working out at ton miles per '''bis is just one example of how the Railways compete with road traffic. I am told that the Ashburton train often does nearly as well. —T am, etc., DOWNCAST..
