NEWS AND NOTES.

A swarm of flying ants hovered around the top of tho Durie Hill memorial in Wanganui, much to the discomfort of visitors. The ants flew in black clouds and when not obscuring the view of the countryside settled on the garments of the climbers and intruded into places where they were most unwelcome. Tho more energetic members of the party wav- ’ ed handkerchiefs to scare off the I insects, while .one gentleman puffed . dense clouds of tobacco smoke with effective results. But the ants won I out in the end and the tower was | soon vacated. Long after the visitors had left the memorial hands were busy rubbing irritated skin and the casual observer would naturally not think of flying ants as having been the cause of the unbecoming antics of the excursionists. Tho parishioners of St. Mary’s Church are reminded that the annual meeting lakes place this evening at •8 o’clock.
