HEAVY RAINFALL.
TAUAIARUNUr ISOLATED. By Telegraph—Fre.ss Association. TAUALARUNUJ, Alav 3. A tremendous downpour lust night caused the rivers to rise rapidlv. This morning the Wanganui " River was not. greatly affected by flood waters, although she was. running much above the normal level, but- the Ull- - .River is high and carrying much debris, with the result that the Tarim gahat-Turingamotu bridge was carried away at 11 o’clock this morning. This meariH that communication north of Taumnrunui by road is now cut off. A bridge at the same piece was carried away by last year’s floods. The -stock bridge at Napier’s Farm, in the Taringamotu valley was also washed away Fortunately rain ceased about four o’clock this morning, and Ims held off since. Had the rain continued the AVanganui would probably have risen to a d<i 1 ■» r cc^r«n»is hoiclvt. The Pukuveka Sawmills Coy., at Afanuiiai, has been forced to abandon operations owing to damage caused by the flooding of the I’unga- l’ungoj stream. The Company’s bridges have been carried away, and with the destruction of the first bridge all communication with the men operating higher up ceased. The full extent of the damage is not yet known.
