Later details of Smith’s overland journey to Barrow show that t'he party suffered severe hardships owing to tho intense cold, and shortness of food. Of 68 dogs with which they started only fifteen were alive on reaching Barrow. Many died of hunger, and others were So weak that they were shot to end their misery. In view of the difficulties so far encountered, Captain AA'ilkins is considering tho reorganisation of the arrangements for conveying stores to the base, and carrying out the genera! plans of the expedition. Captain AViikins and Lieutenant Eielsons returned here on Friday night from Barrow. It has been decided to use the Alaskan to seek land in the Polar seas. After overhaul they will return to Barrow, and hop off when the weather permits. Captain’Wilkins said: “We will have enough gasoline for twelve hours over tho icefields, and return to Fairbanks. The Alaskan, can cover 100 miles per hour.”
