PERSONAL.
Mr A. C. Hanlon arrived in Timaru from Dunedin yesterday. The Hon. J. G. Coates (Prime Minister), accompanied by his private secretary (Mr F. D. Thompson) passed through Timaru yesterday, eu route to Christchurch, where lie will remain for a few days.
At the conclusion of yesterday’s meeting of the Mackenzie County Council members met the county engineer (Mr R. L. Banks) in a social way, and after referring in most complimentary terms to- his work as county engineer, over a. long period of years, asked his acceptance of a case of high quality pipes, tho gift being accompanied by the hope that Mr Banks will remain for many years at Fairlio to preside over the affairs of the big county as satisfactorily as lie lias done in the past. Mr Banks was characterised as a cojmty clerk and engineer unexcelled for capability and. thoroughill New Zealand; and in oidei to do him honour by , perpetuating his name in the county, it was unanimously decided to call-the .unnamed island in Lake Tekapo, adjoining Motu An In. "Banks Island.” Mr Banks thanked members of the Council for then- kindness to him, and with characteristic modesty, said lie was quite, sure: Hint he did not deserve the flattering things that had been said of him, nor the honour done him in naming an island after him
