BURNED IN EFFIGY.

Socialist Hatred Of '1 Mussolini. BELGIAN OFFICIAL REPUDIATION. , ’ By Cable —Press Association —Copyright. Reuter's Telegrams. (Received April 29, 7.40 p.m.) BRUSSELS, April 28. In the Senate, the Foreign Minister, M. Vandervelde, referred to the burning of the effigy of Signor Mussolini, in the village of La Louviere, M. Vandervelde said that such outrageous behaviour, towards representatives of friendly countries could not be tolerated. (Last week the Brussels correspondent of “The Times” stated that Baron Rofiin-Jacquemyus, Minister of Interior, demanded an immediate report on an incident arising from a Socialist anti-Fascist meeting at La Louviere, a small industrial town, where the audience burned an effigy of Mussolini with which the Socialists previously had paraded the streets. The effigy was dressed in black with a military helmet, and the nose was bandaged. It is alleged that the police did not interfere because the Mayor of La Louviere is a Socialist, it the inquiry establishes the accuracy of the story, Baron Jacquemyns will demand that the participants he punished, but as his Socialist colleagues in the Cabinet are unlikely to support drastic action, Baron Jacquemyns will probably resign. Meanwhile the Italian Ambassador has been summoned to Rome. Subsequently it was announced that Belgium had apologised to Italy for the insult.)
