Tim dispute which has been simmering for some time between tbe Ellis Burnand Co. and tbe Native owners of a block leased for timber-rutting came to a climax when tbe Maoris stopped a locomotive on tbe border ot tbe block, ten'miles from Mangapehi. A Maori representative served notice on tbe manaper, ebarpinp the eompany witli broach of agreement, and stated that tbe eomnany and its employees will be treated ns trespassers if found on tbe block, as tbe apreements were cancelled. Tbe locomotive, returned to Manpapebi, and foodstuffs and mail were sent on a horse truck. , The Native owners contend that increased royalties agreed upon last year became payable over twelve months apo, while the deelares they are not payable till the new agreement is approved by the Native’Land Court, which will consider tbe matter at next sitting.
