S.C.J.C. meeting to-day and to-mor-row. JUrst race each day at 12 o’clock. Forburv trots Friday and Saturday. Hawke’s Bay meeting Friday and Saturday. , . Trenand has finished .second on hvo occasions since ho last won a race. Becky Logan Ims been placed a times this season, and has-won Allot). Kapuna is still on the idle list, as a result of the injury he sustained at Riccarten at Easter. ' 'Tea Tray two-year-olds have won £5570 this season—not a bad beginning for a young sire. Mr A G. Hill, Dunedin, has purchased the English stallion Last Dart, uho will go into F. Shaw’s stable. Bachelor Gav, one or the most promising hurdlers in the country, has resumed work after an enforced holiday. Kulnine, who coliecti'd u stake at Ashburton, is a . three-quarter brothel to Aerou, but is not nearly so wcllgaited as his speedy relative. 'The ambulance arrangements at Ashburton last week came in for some criticism. . ’• , , _ , ,- n , Newcourt registered 4.39 oil a 4.0 d mark at Ashburton and then could finish only second. . JL Slow will steer lenterficld and Blue Hall over the obstacles to-dav, and 0. Cull uni will he on King Abbey and Bonatic. . . , . Happy Days was shaping well m Ins education' as a hurd'er, but cut lun<scll’ and was in consequence allowed to forfeit his engagement at Washdyke. Trains will leave Ttmaru for the racecourse to-day at 11.10 and 12.10, and continence the return trip at 0.5 and 5.15. „ . , . Tile hurdler General Retain, who is now e'cvcti or tivolvo years old. is boing pottered about the Riccartou tracks. . Gloaming has been sent to Ins owner’s station in North Canterbury, and it can be taken lor granted that the miracle horse has bidden adieu to the race track. Whakuku, a Great Audubon four-year-old owned and trained by Ay. Bryce, has been a bit unlucky m Jus only two starts this season. At limaru in the spring he was just beaten in a fighting finish in particularly fast time, and at Ashburton last week lie had to be content with third place after going 2.54. It is not unlikely that there will be speedier two-year-olds geared up for the Sapling Stakes, but there will not be many better finishers in the held than the Author Dillon gelding Acre. It is reported from Nelson that Imprint, who iiad to be spelled for some mouths owing to meeting with an injury, lias been taken in hand again, and 'is to be given a special preparation tor the Trotting Cup. Pink Note lias won five races out or six starts, and there are more unlikely happenings than that the Dim-edin-owned three-year-old will make it half a do/.en to-day. The Paper Money gelding is a determined iin.slier, and carries weight well. It is feared that the racecourse Ims seen the last el Gold Light, the best mare of her time, and one ol the best of her sex the Dominion lias produced. Not so brilliant as Desert Gold, she was an incomparably better stayer loan Die All B uck muiv. mill universal regret will be felt -if her retirement proves to lie permanent. Sir Hugh Denison, who held, two records in connect.on with the Australian turf—won. the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup double in one season with the same horse, and paid JOoOgns for a vearbng—is coming back into the ranks of owners. lie purchased one ol Mr AV. (I. Stead’s- Leighton yearlings at -Randwick this mouth. If Koliara has gone on the right way since Easter, J. Bryce should be very Hear the front in the big event at I'orImry on Friday. Although short ol a race, and made a good deal of use ol at Addington, Kohanv stepped about 4Op and be is on 4..12 at forbury. Visitors to the S.C.J.C. meeting who desire to do so will be üb'e to witness the full programme'aL \\ nshdyke on Tliursdav and' reach Dunedin in. time lor the' Forbury trots-. -The evening train for Oamaru will connect with the 9 5 maids train which is due in Dulled ria,res will he attached to the lattei train if required. Over 40 horses from Canterbury amt AVest Coast arrived from the north yesterday. The Otago contingent numbers about °O. and Southland lias sent up about, a dozen, Half-a-dozen I rom Orari, and ten or so Irom AAitshdvke, make up at least 90 horses available for the S.C.J.C. .1011111111 meeting, so ilct there is little likelihood oßsmal. fields on either day The decision to tighten the class for the Trotting Cup to 4.28 seems to have met. with very general approval. D was popular 'opinion that at least a second should have been shorn oil the limit in lust year's race, and the lopping off of nearly two seconds is regarded as a praiseworthy attempt to remedy that omission. There are so many speedy pacers in sight- now that there is no reason to I ear a shortage of eligible horses in NovomboS'.

Rapine, who cost 450 guineas as a. yearling, lias won over £16.000 in stakes. Among the important races standing to the credit' of the Martian gelding are:— Auckland Champagne. Stakes, Avondale Guineas, Wellington Cup. Auckland St. Leger, Wellington St. Leger.' Trentluun Gold CupTtwieeL Awapuni Gold Cup, Napier Cup, Metropolitan Handicap, Auckland Cup, Autumn Stakes. Cumberland Stakes, and A.J.O. Plate (the last'three at Rawlwick). . GleiUi'iiin this week will strive to win the doiible—Hawke’s Bav Stakes and Ormond Gold Cup—which last year was captured by Gloaming. In the Stakes (6*' furlongs). she will need to be 111 the apex of her form to defeat Rereinoana. and in the Cup tlie odds are that the Tuiatinkbtrained gelding

will prove her master, and Rapine in Lis present form must lie reckoned with even at ti mile. ’ Two speedy juveniles ivoro inirn<luec<l in the Improvers’ Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday. One of them, ■Havelock, (the first of Rev de Oro’s Dock to raceY, was made favourite in a her field, despite the fact that it was anticipated that no horse had much chance unless it was callable of going round about T-10. After losing a pood deal of ground at the sftait, TJaydock wns up with tbe h'aders when sbe fell at tbe ton of tin' straight. Aere. an .Author ’Dillon vmimst/T. wb.o bad been given a preliminary online; at Kih"mere, started at a reeie m rative price. am 1 put up an excellent perform-nice by finishing second in bcLter Ilian -'lOl . It is apparent Unit it wi' ! false a -nc dv youngster to win the Sap:in;; Slakes in June.

Tennessee's Child, who accounted for a double in impressive fashion at Oamaru last mouth, tackled a two-mile trip for the first time at Ashburton. The North Otago horse was sent out favourite. and at one stage looked to have a good chance, of success. Ho was, however, made u good deal ol use of in the early stages, and covered a fair amount of ground. Despite this defeat, Tennessee’s Child mm- be kept on the list of prospective good ones for Forbury.

The public, especially tbe_ local section, supported Mr 11. h . Nicoll’s colours with spirit at the. Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting, but the results did "’not come up to expectations. Seven horses carried the cau de nil jacket, but only one of them returned a dividend, aiid an investment of one pound per race ou candidates from Durbar Lodge would have shown a loss of nearly a fiver. •

Muribaupo looks in excellent shape, but lus breathing apparatus is under suspicion, and if the ,Sunny .Lake gelding does not race well at the autumn meetings, F. D. Jones is not likely to persevere with him during the winter. A’olant was responsible for a smart performance when lie won the Templeton Handicap, and this form will not be overlooked b.v backers this afternoon. The Orari three-year-old, however, is at the other end of ibe handicap to-day, and it will be interesting to note bow be acts under weight in open company. Limerick looks the best Derby proposition of this season’s juveniles, but over, ibe Guineas distance Lysander, Commendation, Kiosk and Joy King will all have admi-s:*., and the early three-year-old events next .season prnjniise to bo unusually interesting. In a mile, handicap there would not 6c many pounds between the quintette named. Gallopers trained in this district have won a very large number of races both on the flat and over obstacles during the last few years, but in many cases they have been owned by residents of other parts of the Island. The reverse has been the case r.his season with tlie trotting brigade, over a dozen useful stakes at Addington. Forbury, Timaru or Ashburton having been won by imhoppled performers owned in the Levels, Geraldine and AVaimate counties.

South Canterbury lias a pretty useful. Jot of trotters to .represent it in Bonny Spec, Burnie, Kelman, Engagement,. B.ue Thorpe, Freeman and one or two others, and they have accounted for a largo proportion of the races provided for the imhoppled division this .season. It is much to be regretted, however, that the noblest Homan of them all, Lazarus, has beeiy out of commission for some months. This fellow gave promise of developing into a. high-grade performer, and it wilt be unfortunate if be is not able to race next season.

Rapine will go into winter quarters acclaimed as the best class horse in the Dominion at pres'mit. He was unlucky to be beaten on two occasions at Rioearton, but at that period lie was not at his best, and his record suggests that ho is an autumn horse. His achievement in making liis own running and winning the Awapuni Gold Cup in only a fraction outside Sasanof’s track record, was a striking one, especially as the course did not fuvour such a"long-striding horse. It is rather a pity that Rapine was not on hand to represent the Dominion at the A.J.C. meeting at Easter. Taking a line through Pilliewinkie, it is safe to conclude that Mr A. B. AVilliams’ crack would have stretched the neck of AVindbag and Co. jt was left to the Munawatu fixture to bring about something approaching finality in regard to the two-year-old championship. AVhen the Easter meetings were begun. Lysander, Commendation, and Joy King were generally regarded as tlie pick of the bunch, though Limerick had some admirers. Lysander was the only one of the three cracks who emerged without a blot on his escutcheon. Commendation, lost many friends as a result of his display in the Clm'lenge Stakes at Rieearton. and Joy King fell from grace at Auckland. where the honours went to Lysandor. A new Richmond appeared in the field in Kiosk and Limer.ck, substantially confirmed tbe good impression bv adding the ALuiawatu Sires' Produce Stakes to his Christchurch win. Limerick has won the only two seven furlong events in which leading two-year-olds have figured this season, and on that account has tlie best Derby credentials. J,ysauder is brilliant and apparently endowed with an equable temperament, but bis breeding strongly .suggests that he will be. more at home over shorter distances than a. mile and a ha’f. Last year only eight nominations were received for the 'Timaru Cup. Fur to-day’s race there are exactly twice that number of aiceptois, and a dozen of them can lie regarde.l as prouablr starters. Fourteen have been paid up for in tbe Smil;b!ie]:l. and seventeen in tin' Doncaster, and after mak.iig allowance foi’ dual engagements. . it .serins safe to ant'eipate a double-figure field in each of tbe three open fiat races. Timarii-born Ben Deeley, who has not been seen in public for two or three years, has been successful in obtaining a Lliree mouths’ conditional ticket, and is said to be assured ol a fair amount of riding. Ten or a dozen years bade Dedov was at the. top of tlie tree, and held a retainer lroni 11. J. .Mason’s stable, hut he has reached an age at which it would be too much to expect 'him to diep'uv all his onelime skill in the saddle. Dooley's first important win was on Golden Rose in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie in J 903. During his career he won two New Zealand Cups. two Auckland Cups, three New Zealand Derbies, two A.J.C. Derbies, two AVollington Cups, and alinoti every race, of importance in the Dominion. .Among the horses be steered to victory have been Gloaming, Sasanof, Kilbov, Biplane, Balboa, Afterglow,- Karo, Rossini, Chortle, Vice-Admiral, A’agabond, Nones, Warplane, and other well-known performers.

It. Tow nicy was associated with another winning I rotter last Saturday, getting Kclmun home from 108 behind against a big field, "'lie AA'iiicbester gelding ran into a good position with iim’- or five furlongs to go, and when his driver asked him for.another effort in the .straight, he soon took the measure of the leaders and won decisively’.' Kelmaii did not hear the polished appearance of some of the other runners, and looked as if useful tasks were assigned to him on oil' days, hut he never seemed to put a foot wrong on the journey. Town'ey just failed to land another long-priced winner in New court, .who missed by only half a. lion cl catching Locanda Child in the slow two-r.iiler. Witli a pinch of luck Newcourt. would have iron ebnifort'.iblv. His driver was disappointed when seeking an opening near the rads, and lied to pull across to the outside to get a. run. Townlev has won throe races this season with Kelma.u. two with Bonny Spec, and two with Engagement. lie is now level with T. Wad's and I). AVitliers, having notched seven wins with nnhopplcd trotters this season. Wallis's sure vees were gained with Lazarus, Burnie (3), Blue Thorpe (2). and Freeman.

There is a possibility that Avow Zealand will have three or four representatives in (lie A.J.C. 'J)erbv next spring. The owner of (ionunoiuhdinn has signified his intention of sending the hig gelding across, in rpiest of the rich prize, and one inducement to undertake the trip is that the light-handed running should counteract the youngster’s tendency to hang out. Jo.v K : ng is anoLher prospective candidate, with staying hlood to recommend him, ami Tea Tray also may he given an opportunity of making a hid for o'ass'e di :- Unction. It is safe to assume' that, all going well in Ihe interim. biiuerick will he asked to emuieL'' the feed ot his half-brother I’alylmena. and if a hook were opened on the' race now Air Knight’s gelding would command most support of lie' probable A.Vir Zesh.al representatives.
