TE AAV A. A very enjoyable social was held at Winchester Settlement on Friday last, when Aiiss 1 Brcmncr, the popular lonelier of Tc Awa school, was the recipient of a handsome- .gold-mounted fountain pen from her pupils as a mark of ;!iei>‘ appreciation of her care tin ring the recent visit to the Exhibition. Aiiss L. Collins made the presentation. A similar duty was discharged by Aiiss Nora Smith, who -uncled Aiiss Bremner’.'s general conduct of the the girls of the Winchester School, who had also been under Aiiss Bremncr’s care.'

Air Cribb. the chairman of the To. Awa School, spoke appreciatively of Aiiss llremner's general conduct of the school, which, was making good progress and of the capable, way in which Aiiss Bromuor had cared for the children entrusted to her at the Exhibition. Air J. L. White, of Winchester, and Air J. Doßesmy. chairman of the Winchester School Committee warmly endorsed the chairman’s remarks, declaring that the girls could not have boon in better hands, and the parents felt deeply indebted to Alias Brcmncr for her kindness to them.

Replying, Aiiss Breniiier thanked the children of both ’.schools for their presents, which, however, she felt she scarcely deserved. She had enjoyed the trip and the girls had behaved splendidly, in 1 "et die did not think I here was a finer lot of girls at the Exhibition. (Applause). During the evening a number of musical items were given and were well received, and a very dainty supper was served by the ladies. AT FAIRLIE.

A pleasant function was held in Eairiio last Thursday night, when the friends of Air AV. N. Jones gathered to hid him farewell on the eve, of his departure, from the district. Mr AV. L. Brown presided, and re- ! ferred 1o the many good qualities of | the departing guest. During his throe years in Fairlie. Air Jones had made a ! host of friends, and lie always conducted his business in a courteous and straight-forward manlier.
