SPORTING.

GREAT BINGEN AMISS. UNLIKELY STARTER ON SATURDAY.. • By Cable —Press Association—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. 'Cable Association.. PERTH, March 18. It is reported that Great-Bingen is amiss, and it is feared that lie will he unable to compete in next Saturday’s championship trotting contests. AV AIM ATE RAGING CLUB.' MOUNTAIN LION’S SECOND CUP. Delightful ‘ weather favoured the opening of the Wainiato Racing Club s annual fixture yesterday, and the attendance appeared to be well up to the average. The track was in excellent order, and tho arrangements and appointments left very : little to be desired 1 . Some interesting racing was witnessed, the struggle for supremacy in the last race providing an exhilarating wind-up to the'day’s sport. 'Hie AA’aimiate Cup resulted in another meritorious, win for Mountain Lion, who carried top weight in front nearly all the way. It is something of u, coincidence that last year also the big gelding carried 9.2 (and Emerson), started second favourite, and led practically from end to end. The top-weight, Sun Up, also succeeded in the President’s Handicap, running the distance in 1.13 3-5, which must be nearly a track record. Good fields contested the trotting events, but the harness race was spoiled by several of tho competitors failing to begin well, and by a mix-up at the back of the course in the final round. The handsome trophy which accompanied the winner’s share of.the stake in the Cup was presented with appropriate ceremony to Mr J. M. Samson, the president (Mr J. Matheson) felicitating the Dunedin sportsman in annexing the cup a second time. Mr Samson made an appreciative response. The executive work was capably discharged by Mr A. J. Hoskins and his and it is to be regretted that the financial results of tlie meeting did not come quite up to expectations. The totalisator turnover for the day was £12,159, compared .with £13,628 10s last year. HURDLES TO AVHARNCLIFFE. Naughtv Peter, who was responsible for tho death of F. Lloyd at Riccarton last week, was withdrawn from the hurdles, leaving five to go to the post. AVliarncliffe and Coastguard, dominated the betting, finishing up with only £lO separating them on the machine. Coastguard led over the first fence from \Vhamcliffe, but before the second obstacle was reached, Timaru had established a useful lead from Coastguard. Leaving the straight Timaru was several lengths clear of Coastguard, who was jumping very badly, with Wliarncliffe at the head of the. others. Wliarncliffe’ joined the other pair at the six furlong post, and taking charge half a mile from home, won easily by five lengths from Coastguard, who was twenty lengths :n front of IV mni-u. Red Admiral lost his rider, and Rory O’Moore ran off two fences from home. AVliarncliffe jumped better than his opponents, and had the race wbn half a mile from. home. Coastguard’s only good: jump was put in at the last fence,- when liis chance was- hopeless. Red Admiral’s rider made a good recovery at the- hurdle opposite the stand', after being crowded by Rory O’Moore, but lost liis seat at the-last obstacle. , : .

A TAVO-YEAR-OLD WINNER.. Emerson’s mount, Moratorium, was made an odds on chance in the Trial, being entrusted with twice as much money as the two-year-old Iteonui, who was second choice. Rconui and Moratorium were first to show out from Elba and Exide. At tho bend,, Rconui and Moratorium were well clear,, of ICxide and Red Heather, Elba having been sent back. Turning for home there was not much between Moratorium, Rconui and Exide, but in the race to the winning post Rconui shook oil Moratorium and won by threequarters of a length from Ex'.de, who finished well and beat the favourite by half a leugtli for second money. Red Heather was fourth, a length and a half away. Kiliroa anil Orange 801 l lost ground at the start and were never prominent. Rconui displayed signs of slim soreness during liis-preliminary,- and this caused many backers to stand off, him. Moratorium had every chance, but apparently is not so good as supposed. MOUNTAIN LION’S ENCORE. The AA’aimate Clip attracted a field of five, in which Overdrawn was made a £2OO better favourite than Mountain , Lioii’T who was in considerably more 'demand than. Tarleton. Overdrawn anil Roman Archer were first to break the line, but after going a furlong Mountain Lion van to the front, and passing the six furlong barrier the black ge’ding ;had opened up a gap of four lengths from Fresco, who was three lengths clear of Roman Archer. Half a mile from home Fresco had reduced the leader’s advantage to two lengths, Overdrawn being three lengths further back, and Tarleton still hist, l'reseo challenged Mountain Lion heading for the straight, but ran a bit w ile, and Mountain Ljon came on to repeat liis last year’s win by a length and n ha 1. Tarleton finished with a great, hue belated run, and defeated Fresco by half a head for second money, Overdrawn being about the same distance away. Mountain Lion’s win was largely attributable to the horsemanship of Emer- • son, who stole a. lead of some lengths at the first bend.

TROT GOES TO METHVKN. The Mctliven gelding Bay Nut was elected favourite for the Morven Trot, with Electric Huon and Day Pointer next in request. Medallion Jack, Vasiliki, Electric Huon and Maureen Galindo all began badly, and Master Bell also lost some ground. Zenith led for a mile from Bay Nut and .ATaster Bell, but at the last heml Bay Nut took charge and won comfortably by a couple of lengths from Zenith, who

was twenty length’s in advance of Electric Huon, with Day Pointer another ten lengths back. The race was m some Jcgrop marred by a-sp'llat hack, Medallion Jack and badie Dillon falling and interfering with several of those behind them. The winner was not extended, but had Electric Huon not lost so much ground at the start, the contest would have been decidedly interesting. SUN UP ALL THE WAY. For the President’s Handicap, Corn Money was > sent out a good favourite, but there was solid support for Sun up and Volant also. Sun Up was quickest to begin, and led up the back ironi Clontarf, Volant and Fulmar. The oi‘der was unchanged at the bend except that Corn Money, who had missed tho jump out, improved his position a bit. Sun Up turned into tho straight with a useful lead, and stayed on to win by a couple of lengths from Corn Money, who camo with a rattle and beat Fulmar on the post by a head. Clontarf was only a neck away, fourth. The winner’s time was about tho fastest for six furlongs ever registered on tho track. ' Corn Money was unlucky, but- even with an even start, it is no certainty that lie could have headed Sun Up, who was in liis generous mood. EASY FOR FRIVOLOUS. Backers declared unmistakably for Frivolous in the Waitangi Hack Welter, late investments sending Exide out second choice. There was some fiddling at the post, and Kapuna lost several lengths in a ragged jump out. Bon Hopo and Silver Lining, from the inside, soon took charge from Frivolous, and at the half mile the paid were three lengths ahead of the favourite, with Exide and Royal Reel next. Frivolous joined the leaders at the bend, and taking charge at the home turn, won eas !v by three or four lengths, from Exide, who finished well and defeated Silver Lining by a neck. Kapuna was flying at the finish, and was less than a length behind the third liorse\ Gay Jiiii and Royal Reel won; next, Bon Hope having faded right out. Frivolous went down rather scrateliily, and took some tinio to warm up in the race, but at the end she smothered the opposition, and it should not be long before she scores again. Exide ran a decent race, but Kapuna seems the most likely of the beaten lot to gain early distinction. THE SADDLE TROT. . The Ashburton gelling Tennis was made a hot. order for the saddle trot, Oamaru providing the second selection j with Ivinness. Sunset and Vasiliki stood on the mark. Master Bell led off from Morven Lass and Salient, but at tho end of two furlongs, tho order was Morven Lass, Master 801 l and Salient. Salient stumbled and fell rounding the bend, and turning into the back Kinness ran up and was soon in second place behind Morven Lass. The leader broke with. five furlongs to go, leaving Kinnoss in chftrge from Tennis, with Ruby. Carbine and Master Bell next. Kinness, Tennis and Ruby Carbine were not far apart at the homo turn, but Kinness came away again and won conifortab'y by four lengths from Tennis, with Ruby Carbine (easing up), half a dozen lengths back. Pretty Pointer and Medallion Jack were next. This gave F. E. Jones hisjthird successive win, two on gallopers and one on a pacer. Ilis mount went smoothly all the way. McLennan was bard at work on Tennis in the straight, but despite tlie fact that lie cut six seconds off his handicap, he could not pace it with the winner, who reduced liis rating by seven seconds.

A ROUSING FINISH. Zaragoza was in more request than Dancing Days for the concluding event, the fact that Courtly Rose was ridden by a hurdle race jockey being held to prejudice her prospects. Brown Lady and Snatcher do'ayed the start, but eventually all were scut away well: Courtly Rose, from the inside, showed out . momentarily, but Dancing Days and Brown Lady soon beaded her off, and turning into the back the order was Dancing Days, Brown Lady, Zaragoza, Courtly Rose be:ng last. Zaragoza was squeezed back at the far corner, leaving Dancing Days, Brown Lady and Courtly Rose to turn for borne together. A great race between this trio and Zaragoza (who got another run on the rails) ended in Courtly Rose winning bv a neck from Dancing Days, witii Biown Lady a head away, and Zaragoza only a neck further back.
