SEAMAN’S WAGES. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, March 17. Reserved judgmeut by Mr Justice MacGregor to-day allowed the appeal or the HoJmwood Shipping Cbmpuny (Wanganui), from the decision of the Magistrate awarding Ben Senrby, a seaman £7 lls, al egedjy underpaid liim by the Company. Tho facts were that in June, 1924, Senrby was an ordinary seaman on the flip Holmwood. He was promoted to able seaman in July.and acted as such until discharged in August. He was aaid £6 monthly, part of the time and £lO for the later period. He claimed ‘or the difference in the rates as under the Seamen’s and Firemen’s Award, which-.gives £9 8s 4d for qn ordinary and £l4 6s 8d for an able seaman. His Honor held that the award did not include seamen employed on sailing vessels, but on'v these employed on vessels propel’ed bv internal combustion engines. The facts clearly showed that the wages paid were regu'nrly paid ordinary and nblo seamen, on vessels of the Holmwood class, trading to and from New Zealand ports.
