THE SCHOOLS.
AVAI MAT ALTAI COMMITTEE. Tho Waimataitai School Committee met last night. Present:—Mr T. R. Mackay (chairman), Mrs A. E. Lawrence, Messrs E. A. Hamilton, G. T. Slade, E. Hoklgatc,and tho lion, secretary (Mr G. Benstead). Tho visitor for tho month, (Mr G. Benstead), reported that on his visit to tho school ho had found everything working satisfactorily. Several of the windows required blinds. The new rooms were excellent, and it would ho a pleasure to ho taught in them. The extra rooms did not give any additional accommodation, but allowed the headmaster to re-arrange his classes. On the present roll of the school there was extra accommodation for about six children.
Some discussion took plaeo with regard to the space gained by the alterations to the school. It was decided to write to tho Board, expressing surprise that tho alterations had not been carried out as required. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The headmaster (Mr G. A. Turner) reported that tho attendance for tlu, first week was 693, second week 699, third week 703, and fourth week 706 Tho average weekly percentage was 94, and the present roll was 706. By nex’t month ho licked that the school would have its permanent staff. Miss Mclntosh continued to relieve in the position recently vacated by Miss Leslie; and Miss Mahon was relieving in place of the extra assistant about to he appointed. Mr Bowie, male assistant, jiegan his duties on March ]. That day fifty-one pupils and lone adults left for Dunedin to visit tho Exhibition. Tho pupils were in charge of Mr Connor (first assistant), Miss Allen (matron), Mr Ashton (second assistant), and Mrs Minilie (School Committee). The children were adequately provided for, were in capable hands. and a profitable and enjoyable, experience should be tho result of tho trip. The work of the school was progressing satisfactorily, and all that remained to be done was the calsomining of the interior and the painting of the exterior of the school. The chairman considered the report io be satisfactory, and it was adopted. Accounts amounting to £8 6s 8d were passed for payment.
