HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. Tlio monthly meeting of the Timaru High School Board was held yesterday. Present —Mr J. Bitch oner, M.P. (chairman), Mesdames W. Raymond and B. H. Low, Messrs W. D. Campbell T. Lyons, J. G. Gow, AY. D. Iteveil, S. D. Mason, H. H. Fraser, [W. F. Clieverton, and Dr. Talbot. CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT. The chairman stated that he had great p'casure in welcoming Mr Mason to the Board as the parents’ representative. As an Old Boy of the. School, Mr. Mason, would be particularly welcome. Mr Mason suitably replied. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. AV. D. Campbell, Mr A\’. D. Revoll, chairman of the Finance Committee, was elected vice-chairman of the Board. Tlie Finance Committee reported that repairs were necessary to plaster walls in various passages at the Rectory, and it was recommended that the work, estimated to.cost £ls, be carried: out. Twenty new desks were required ajt the Girls’ School, owing to the increased roll number, and application had been made to the Department for approval of the expenditure out of endowment income. A strip of asphalt was required around the girls’ tennis courts, and the clay hank alongside also required tarring to prevent clay being washed on to the courts. The, work was estimated to.cost £2O. It was agreed that the work of. asphalting in front of the Memorial Hall was necessary, and it was recommended that the matter be left in the hands of the committee to discuss with tlie--architect and with power to act. It was resolved that the Borough Council be asked to asphalt tho footpath in front of tho Boys' School from Oxford Street westward. In connection with the laying out of . the recreation grounds at the Girls’ School, it had been resolved that the question of a. retaining wall on tlie Cain Street frontage bo held over in the meantime. It was also agreed that steps be taken at once to burn out tho remaining stumps and have the ground dug, and that Mr Harper be asked to suggest the places for, and the kind of shrubs, to be planted. Good work had been done in connection with tlie erection, by tho janitors, of the bicycle sheas at the Bovs’ School, a considerable saving having been effected. The committee ; recommended that a. small bonus be paid to them in recognition oi their work, Mr Rosevear especially,^having on a number of occasions earned out and supervised work in the nature of improvements. . _ ~ Arising out of the Finance Committee’s report, it was resolved that the Committee be also asked to look into ■ the question of top-dressing the tennis court. Hie report was adopted. The report of the Appointments Committee advising tlie appointment of Mr T McDonald to the C grade vacancy, and Mr S. Mills to tho D grade position yvns approved. f HIGH SCHOOL REBERA r ES. The ranger, Mr AY. Hyde, reported on the erection of an embankment on land leased by Mr A\. Mackie at Clandebove, stating that in. Ins opinion Mr Mackie should lie met in some way by tho Board. , ... „ ~ The chairman considered that «s. tne Board held the largest interest m tlio property concerned, they should do something to meet the tenant with some, reduction. Mr Lyons said that tlie Geraldine. River Board were putting the banks op wherever required, and lie would not like to see that body asked to pay any compensation.
