, “ I INTER-SCHOOLS MATCH. i i WAITAKI v. TIMAItU. Under ideal weather conditions the ’ annual match between Waitaki and '.timaru Higu Schools was commenced on the Timaru Park wicket, yesterday, in tno presence oi a largo crowd oi interested spectators. (Last year the match was played on Waitaki grounds, and rcsu.tcd m a win for Timaru by 4 wickets and 4 runs.) Yesterday's wicket was in fair order, j although inclined to be a trifle bumpy at times. Waitaki won the toss and elected to bat, tne opvning pair, Carrington and Smith, facing tlie bowling el lundsay and Salt. Gindsay’s first i over was productive of one run. Salt, I with his m\st bad, dismissed Carrington for one. Henry t..cn joined Smith, and both settled down to business. I Smith withstood the assaults of tlie first two bowlers, but Thomson, with the second ball of his second over, .shattered his bails, alter the batsman had made a nicely-played 34. Henry contributed a servicesb c 20 before being ruled Ibw to Thomson. With five down for 71, Vimaru's bowling was proving effective, but the Waitaki tail revealed some good bats, such as Francis 36, and Nirnmo 29. Other scorers who performed creditably were Faulks 11 and Sutton 15. The Timaru fielding was patchy, but improved as she match progressed. Extras to tlie total of 27 also swelled the Waitakians’ total • The innings, which produced 189, lasted about 3 hours. Shortly after 4.30 the opening bats- ' men for Timaru, McKeehnie and Jones, went to the wickets against the bowling of Fau ks and Carrington. Faulks’ first over was treated cautiously, McKcehnie hitting one off it. McKechnio, alter contributing 9, which included two fours, was out lbw to Carrington. A rot then set in, 5 wickets being down tor 47. Thomson, who was sixth man, received an ovation as lie returned with 25 to his credit His effort was productive of the highest individual score, he being the only Timaru batsman to reach double figures in a total of 84. Faulks and Carrington were the onlv bowlors tried, and performed very creditably, dismissing the home team for S 4.
