The retirement on superannuation of Mr.'j. P. Arnold, for many years inspector of , factories, at -Timaru, - w.as the occasion ;of a very pleasant little gathering -,on Saturday evening, , when tlie j esteem and respect in which- the retiring officer is regarded was voicqcl by alp present.- In making the presentation of a. wallet and smoker’s outfit, Air. At the con elusion'; of tho ordinary business at last night’s meeting of the; Timaru Borough -Council, Councillor Gibb tendered his resignation as a mem-,' ber of the Council. In. doing so ho said that this , was. .owing solely to private reasons, and had nothing to do , with anything .which had taken place at the Council table. The Mayor expressed regret: at Councillor , Gibb s .resignation,,,but.said; lie presumed that Councillor ’Gibb had very good reasons for what ho was doing. Ho appreciated very much- the, assistance that Councillor Gibb,,; Jiad given . them. Councillors . Arnold.' Kelly, and Chittoek made complimentary references to Councillor Gibb’s work, referring especially to his able conduct of the Electric Light Committee, of which he was chairman. The resignation was aeeopted witli’.regret, and with thanks to Councillor. Gibb for llis services. At present visiting Timaru is Air W. -H. Kay, of Sandringham, Victoria, an -old Timaru boy, who was horn hero about, fifty years ago, and who is now revisiting, the scones of his childhood. By invitation, Mr Kay attended last -night’s meeting of tho Borough' Council, and -occupied a seat to the right of tlie Mayor. His Worship extended a .hcartv welcome to him, and in acknowledging this, Air Kay said that liis father (Mr George Kay) was one of tho pioneers of Timaru. His father wan still alive, and was now living at Cheviot. ~Ho (tho speaker) had very pleasant recollections of Timaru, where he had served his time as a printer m tho office of the “Timaru Herald. He mentioned that in Victoria, where lie came from, they had the ward system of electing councillors, who held office for three years.
