SUNDAY AFTERNOON BATHING.
AGREED- TO BY BOROUGH r COUNCIL.,- ; At last night’s meeting of. the' Timaru ■ Borough CounclL a disoussion took place on a request fyom the South Canterbury Centre of the NeAV Zealand Swimming Association for the Council to aIIOAV thedbiUhing facilities at Caroline Bay -Alo t he- .open on Sunday afternoons during December and January. The Works Committee had recommended that the request be not granted. ' Councillor Kelly suggested, that the'request should be agreed to. He knew’of no reasons Avhy the- request should' not be granted,' bite’PleiUy AVhy it should he. , Cbunfillor Chittock skid j he entirely disagreed Avith thd’.recommendation of the Works Cohnnittee; if Timaru Avere to be progressive . it would have to do as other toAvns did, and there Avas no reason /Mly, the Bay facilities should not be dpeit-'.bh Sundays. ■ "■ •. J’V. > Councillor Benstead inquired ; the reason for the committee’s recommendation? Was it considered immoral to bathe on Sundays?* ...
I The Mayor said the matter had not been discussed by the ; Works Committee on this occasion, as it had so often been discussed befqre. Councillors Vinnell and, • Kelly-nloA-ed an amendment to the committee’s report: “That tlie ; request be agreed to, the facilities to be open till 5 p.m. on Sundays.” The mover said the proposal was absolutely sound, and there Avas no reason at ail why the request should not he granted.- “ Councillor Hunt said that they /should move-with‘.the times, qpd he ; could see no harm in keeping the fai cilities open till 5 p.m. on Sundays. Councillor SatterthAvaite said he 'had consistently opposed this matter and intended still to oppose it. He asked th,e Mayor's ruling as to whether it'Avould not be • necessary to rescind the resolution alreadjy on I the books of the Council before Councillor Yinnell’s amendment could be taken. ■ ‘ v. I The Mayor said he did not think there was a resolution on the books to rescind. Councillor SatterthAvaite then asked that the matter be referred back to, the committee for re-bonsidera-tion. . Timaru did not want ito be guided by Manly, New Brighton, or any other place. The Council had always set its face against- it in the I past, and they had the reputation of the Bay to consider. If only on the ' score of expense the matter should be referred back to the committee. Councillor Benstead said the question was one for the Ayhole Council rather than for the Works Committee, and if it Avere held over it should be for consideration by the Avliole Council at next meeting. Personally he could see no in opening the bathing facilities till 5 p.m. on Sunday afternoons. Councillor Gibb said most of tfiein believed in a 48-hour week, and if the Jiathing facilities Avere to he open on Sunday afternoons he Avanted ,to be sure that their employees would be protected. It seemed to him that many people required a good dehl of wasiiing. On a vote being taken the amendment was carried, the voting being: For the amendment—Councillors Benstead, Gibb, Chittock, Hawkey, Vinnell; Kelly, -Hunt' and Arnold.
Against—The Mayor,' and Councillors Hart, McNab, Hay, Sattertliwaite.
