FIRES.
CONFLAGRATION IN GISBORNE. By Tsloursph—Press Association. GISBORNE, December 13. Shortly before midnight on Saturday, fiainos woro soon issuing from a wooden building in Peel Street, near the centre of the town, and before the fire was quelled, two shops and two workshops were gutted, two more. shops badi.y damaged, and five,motor cal's destroyed. The building was a two-storey one, the top being used by Mellor Dros., coach builders. The paint room had in ir five eais undergoing renovation, and the blaze was a very spectacular one. Good work by tho Brigade saved the adjoining British Empire Hotel. The buildings destroyed were those of •I. saddlery shop and workshop, W. jTSinclair’s electrician’s shop and workshop, Mellor Bros.’ paint shop. A small office, used by; tho Duco Service, and a shop occupied by F. Dru be, bootmaker, were badly damaged. IVo or three rooms on the side of tho British Empire Hotel were dafaged by water.
COSTLY BLAZE IN SAMPLE ROOMS. By Telccrnph—Press Association DUNEDIN, December 13. Damage estimated to run into many thousands of pounds was done by fire in Messrs Crust and Crust’s sample roofs in Manse Street at 2.5 a.m. to-day. Tho rooms occupied by the Wanganui Woollen Co., and L. R. Gardiner and Co., chocolate and cohfectionerv importers, were gutted, and tho valuable stocks .completely destroyed. Ten other importers had stocks seriously damaged by smoke and vM Ol '- The darnago to the building is light compared with the loss sustained by tenants. . , ' A great “savo” was made by the Brigade, after over two hours fight under the worst smoke and neat conditions experienced at a fire in Dunecuu for many years.
