Society held' their annual sports in Victoria Park on Saturday. The weather was ideal for the event, but; it was fortunate that it was just at the . end of the day’s programme that a southerly wind sprang up and rain fell. The attendance was large, and the. sports seem to become more popular, every year. There were a large nuffiber of visitors from Timaru, and besides a/ full .-tram several journeyed to the sports by motor-car. . Other parts of South Canterbury were also well re- > presented. The tracks were, in good order,, especially the running track. ■ ■No accidents occurred during the day, but ;about the second time round in the mi'le bicycle handicap several riders were bunched just past the finishing post,, and jn an attempt to make an opening one of the riders was bumped back, and was able to gain control of his machine just in time.

The competent band of officials under 1 the president (Mr S. F. Sansen) did great work throughout the day, and it must be gratifying to them that their efforts resulted in such a, successful gathering. Messrs L. O’Loughlin and.. J. M. Ireland again! discharged the secretarial duties in an efficient manner. Before the train from Timaru reached the sports,' several children’s j races and district events had been held. .The open running events attracted i good fields. The Sheffield handicap, j the (principal event on tho card, went , to Jr Murphy, who, from 8 yards defeated W. Tubb (10yds) by about a yard. Murphy won the 100 yards also. • Thoymile provided' a- victory for T. Chamberlain, and the 220 went to C. Garven, who has just recently joined' : the ranks of professionals. • Garven was a -consistent performer in Y.M.C.A. events held of late. A popular win was .'that of the veteran, W. Smylie, in the 440 yards. Smylie had to move at the finish to defeat S. Johnson, who'j also performed creditably. The ; 880 yards was taken by S. Johnson, who -worn-in a convincing manner from A. ,R. !■ King. A popular event was the 320 -yards, hurdles. All the competitors the hurdles successfully, arid (a good finish saw J. Bracken win 1 from C. Garven. In the amateur events, the fields showed a marked im- ' provement on those of last year. The 100 ‘yards attracted a good field, and (was.won by J. Fraser, who defeated j D. .Tate in the final by two yards. Fraser ran very Consistently at the ! High School sports. The 880 yards was carried off by D. Tate, who, after, a ding-dong finish',' defeated R. Hillary. -•ln.the cycling events, the mile went to F. Ward, with Hay, who was an oasy,. winner in his heat, in second place. The two mile proved a victory tor A. Hall, who had a bit in reserve rounding the bend for homo, and won in nice fashion from Hay. The principal .event, .the St. Andrews Wheel Race, went to Willmott, who also j annexed the event last year. Interest in the local race was not sustained. Munro. from scratch took up the run- i ning_ from the start, and quickly over- ' hauling the leaders, won easily. . The wrestling and field events were; full of interest, and enthusiasts found much to enjoy in the dancing : and piping contests.
