Heavy rain in tho Otira district 'caused a washout in the Midland Railway, half a mile on this side of the Otira, dislocating through traffic. The washout increased yesterday to a width of six chains, and a depth of fourteen feet.. Railway passengers were conveyed by motor between Otira and Aickcns stations. Tho express was delayed for four hours. Water is over the line, and the full extent of the damage cannot yet bo ascertained. Mr Gusty, assistant railway engineer, left for the scene-to-night. A slip is reported near Paparoa . mine. ! Rain and may occasion more subsidences. WAIMAKARIRI RISING. Bp Telegraph—Props Association. CHRISTCHURCH, December 10. Reports from Bealey this morning state that the Waimakariri is rising, and Iftcavy rain is falling in the upper reaches.
