“THEY WANT TO EXPORT YOU.’
Overseas Settlement Scheme. LABOUR LEADER’S CRITICISM. By Cabla—Pres. Association—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received December 10, 6.5 p.m.) LONDON, December 9. Mr Ramsay Macdonald (Leader of the Labour Party) speaking at Aberavon, in reference to overseas settlement, said: ‘ ‘They want to export you like coal.” He declared that it was proposed to make families pay money for exporting them. If a proper scheme were devised, with the co-operation of the Labour Parties in the Dominions, to take British families for proper settlement, he certainly would not object. He was not opposed to emigra<tion, but he contended the emigrant must not be used by the capitalists to beat down wages, in the Dominions. If the Government could give 50-50 to settle people in the Dominions, why should not the same thing be done at Home? What they wanted was a great national scheme for land settlement in Britain. There must be great training centres, and they must settle people on. the land in groups of at least two. hundred families.
