THE PROBLEM OF THE PACIFIC.

Is Japan Aggressive?

CLARION CALL TO ANGLOSAXON PEOPLES.

By Cable —Press Association—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received July 22, 6.6 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 21. “The money mad people of the United States to-day are sitting on the edge of a volcano, and do not know it,. Within the next three or four years, trouble will develop in the Pacific between the United States and Japan. What the end will be cannot be toreseen. The centre of gravity of the world is moving to the Pacific. There is a problem the world will bo faced with in the future. The sooner we of the British Empire recognise it, the better for ourselves and the rest of the world.” These and other equally startling statements wore made by the Rev. Dore Bryant, Archdeacon of Monara, who will sail on July 22 for a tour oi Britain, which is expected to last three months. He will espouse the cause of emigration from Britain to Australia, and expects to address meetings while in England. He said that “Japan is aggressive now, and will grow more so. The Empire must realise that the problem of the world to-day is the problem of the Pacific.” _ . “That is how we look at it in Australia,” the speaker added. VVe realise that Japan could pour two or three million highly trained soldiers into Australia before we could get assistance from the nearest British Fleet units. That is one reason why we display such interest in the question of the Imperial Navy’s aid, and why we have provided some vessels or our own to assist in defence. I have been particularly astonished and amazed at the laxity of the United States in connection with the Pacific problem. There are 135,000 Japanese in the Hawaiian Islands, almost as many Chinese, and many Koreans and Filipinos, who would doubtless side with Japan in the event of difficulty. There should be close inter-communica-tion between the different parts of the Empire. The bonds should be strengthened by every means possible. There is heavy work ahead. Japan believes she has a grudge; that she has been insulted through the American immigration restrictions. Some day there will come the war of revenge, it is amazing to me that the peopte or the United States do not realise this.
