EMPIRE WIRELESS GIRDLE.
Imperial Cabinet’s Policy.
LACK OF ENERGY ALLEGED. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. Reuter’s Telegrams. (Received July 21, 7.65 p.in.) LONDON, uuly 20. The House of Commons debated the Post Oilice Estimates.
Mr Vernon Hartshorn (PostmasterGeneral in the Labour Cabinet) taxed the Government with lacking energy in the completion or the Imperial wireloss system. Viscount Wolmer (Under-Secretai j of State for the Post Office) assured the House that the Government was pressing the matter with real energy. He denied that delay had occui-red, except in connection with the construction of the north-eastern stations com xnunicating with Australia and India, in which connection he pointed out that beam wireless was still in its infancy. Loth the Post Oiiiee and the Marconi Company were constantly gaining iresli information, which, on several occasions, made consistent policy difficult. Moreover the technical formalities connected with the ownership oi station sites produced delay, but he hoped these would be completed in a few weeks. He declared that the Wireless Advisory Committee was steadily progressing in the arrival at recommendations regarding tariffs, routes, and the arrangements whereby lib hoped to make a consistent whole. He added that nowhere in the Empire was there a beam station yet working Under the conditions of the public service, but. he hoped a service would be working in October, between Britain and South Africa, and Britain and Canada.
Mr C. S. Ammon (Labour) said he hoped the Postmaster had not so handed over himself to Marconi that we were going to find Imperial communications hampered and checked. He stressed the necessity of getting a move on.
Sir W, L. Mitchell Thompson (Post-master-Generai) thought that Mr Ammon’s fears would prove unfounded, although the beam system was really more or less in the experimental stage. They knew, and Marconi frankly said, that they knew little about it, and until the stations were actually working they were unable to do more than theorise. The debate was adjourned.
