RATEPAYERS ASSOCIATION A meeting of the South End Ratepayers’ Association was held in the South School on Thursday evening. Mr G. Arnold presided over a small attendance. Mr J. Keenan referred to the bad state of Harboro Street, Watlington, and asked tire assistance of tho Association in obtaining improvements. Mr T. Taylor said there were no footpaths in that locality and as the residents had to walk on tho road it was time the matter was brought under tho notice of the Council. The streets in Watlington were tho worst streets in the borough. The matter was referred to the In-
vesiigation Committee. Tho matter of the motalling of bus routes were considered. It was suggested I that the Association should endeavour to have Hassall Street widened. Tire secretary stated that a jietition was in circulation requesting the Council to widen Hassall Street. It was the duty of the Association to support the petition^ t Mr It. Jacqucry said that at _ tho ! present time H.ossall Street wds in a j bad state of repair. He did not consider the Bus Committee on the Council to bo a live one, for if they were they would insist on the Works Committee putting the street in order. As ratepayers they were entitled to consideration, and at present tho street 1 was a danger to tho public. Mr T. Taylor endorsed the words of the previous speaker. It was one of tho worst streets in Timaru. He ad- ; vocated taking immediate action, j It was resolved that the matter be roforrod to the executive who would find out the position in regard to tlio petition that had been referred to. i In reference to the lack of metalling of the bus routes, Mr Taylor said that the Council were working on a conpreliensive plan in regard to that , matter, | On the recommendation of the secretary (Mr D. Petrie) it was decided to confine discussion to the macadamising of tho bus routes. I It was decided to ask tho Council if they had a comprehensive plan in view, for the Association was in the . dark concerning tho matter, j After discussion it was decided to 1 mako a suitable presentation to tho late secretary (Mr W. Gibb) in recognition of his valuable service to the Association.
Mr W. Tubb complained of tho amount of loose shingle on tho footpath on the King Street side of tho South School. The shingle was thrown j over tho fence by the children and was a danger to tho pubilc. He know of j several peoplo_ who had fallen as a i result of treading on the shingle. , It Was decided that tho secretary i write to tho headmaster asking that j tho practice bo stopped. I Tho question of insufficient street lighting was raised by Mr W. Tubb* who suggested that lights bo placed in Marsdon Road and at tbe intersection of Grey Road and North Street, i Tho matter was referred to tho In- ' vestigation Committee. 1 The secretary recommended that a conference bo held with other associations with regard to asphalting a width of four feet on all footpaths I within the borough. By such a scheme double tho length of asphalt could be laid down. The suggestion was referred to tho executive, who will endeavour to arrange a conference, j The ticket svstom at present adopted j on the municipal buses was adversely I criticised, various improvements being ; suggested. j Tho outcome of the discussion was a recommendation to tho Bus Cnm- ; mitteo of the Borough Council asking ! that a card system bo instituted in lieu of tho present system, in order to eliminate the conductor having to .handle money. The ticket'would ho in council fomi, n. coupon to contain ■ twolvo penny tickets, a punch to be I made for every ponnv section. For J example throe punches would ho made l for a three-penny section.
