A BRITISH CUSTOM.

TAKING COUNCILLORS TO CHURCH. By Telßfrrnpli—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, May 6. At the Mayoral installation to-night the Rev. Mr Archer said a problem the Council ought energetically to tackle was housing. The erection of five or six houses a year was inadequate enough to be ridiculous. Three things should bo done for the children—insistence upon ,a pure milk supply, the provision of more play-grounds, and the opening of a picture theatre. In conclusion, Mr Archer said that in many British municipalities a good old custom prevailed of the new mayor inviting members of the new council to accompany him to his church cn the first Sunday morning after his installation. “I wish to introduce that good old custom into Christchurch, and shall be glad therefore if members of this Council will next Sunday morning accompany me to our littlo church in Colombo Street South. As lam a sort of hybrid—being half parson and half politician —I shall not conduct the service myself, hut shall invito a friend to conduct it for me, and you riay be sure it will offend the suceptibihties of no one who takes part m it.
