MEAT COMMISSION.
GISBORNE SITTING CONCLUDED.
By Telegraph—Press Association.GISBORNE, May 4. The Meat Commission to-day discussed a point raised by Mr Lyshar, that when the. TaruherU works were transferred in 1919 from Nelson’s to Vestey’s, the latter did not take proper legal steps to secure authority to carry on. Mr Lysnar contended that; Vestey’s had been operating for twelve months before they took the necessary steps under the Slaughtering and Inspection Act to secure a transfer. Mr Lysnar proceeded to put questions to Mr Tolerton, Vestey’s local manager, re commissions paid to merchants. Tho chairman said they were not notv concerned with Vestey’s present actions, which might be the subject of another tribunal, which might have to consider whether Vestoy’s license should be renewed or revoked. James Wren Nolan, chairman of directors of the Gisborne Sheep Farmers’ Co., called by Mr Jones, stated that lie had discussed the proposed sale to Vestey’s with his directors. The statement that tho directors preferred Vestey’s to purchase was a correct indication of tho feeling. Mr Lysnar, giving evidence, said ho desired to contradict the assertion made by Mr Bowen in regard to a letter alleged to have been given to him by Irwin concerning tallow. Witness denied that there were any terms or conditions made by Irwin concerning the giving of the lctjpor. To the chairman : There was a minute on the books asking Bowen to resign fiom the directorate. It was seconded, but an amendment was carried and no action was taken. Mr Bowen: Did you instruct Boreham in August „not to show offers to Wm. .Anderson and Gordon Woodroffe of £lO7 and £IOB per ton for tallow, saying you could get £l3O per ton for the same fat in Germany for making margarine?—l deny it. I never told anyone that. Wasn’t it a fact that all by-products were to be shipped?—Yes. Did you over break that resolution ? The directors might have disregarded it before selling in some instances. Wasn’t it the object of putting the resolution on the books to take power out of Elliot’s hands and relegate it to yourself?—No. He went near to losing ns fifteen to twenty thousand at one time. The Commission then adjourned to Wellington sine die.
