HEALTH RESTRICTIONS.
To the Editor of the “Tinumi Herald.” Sir,—For taking a fonr-ycar-old child to Ngaere Gardens, in defiance of the ; Health ban in connection with infantile paralysis, a man was fined £l. The Magistrate .stressed the seriousness of the breach, and said defendant had ■ been “trapped” by an advertisement | that children would be admitted, which was ,a deception from start to finish. Compare the foregoing with the case , appeal ing in the “Herald” of even 1 date, in which the Health Department ! Inspector charged tiie Rev. John
Spierings, Catholic priest, for allowing children to attend the Convent school at Mangawharc. The Inspector deposed that ho had warned defendant; yet, in face of this, on two subsequent occasions, children were allowed to congregate. The Magistrate said that defendant was legally guilty of the offence, but if he would promise not to allow children to congregate, ho would stretch tho point, and - dismiss the case on payment of costs. The promise was given, and the case dismissed. Summed up, the two gases appear as followsA conviction of a serious offence by one who was trapped m o same, and a dismissal of a charge, even though defendant was legally guilt}, .and had been previously warned. -it is grand to know that just.ee is sometimes tempered with mercy; on tho other hand, one n »tu ally consider that mercy should bo at least applicable to both of these cases—l am, etc -> “FAIR PLAY. ’I Tinviru, 3rd April.
