The first day of the South canteibuiv Jockey Club races was held yesterday at Washdyke, m .deal weather the brilliant sunshine and the fresh green of the lawns making an appropriate setting for the many charming nowns. Speaking generally, it could bo said that embroidery retained its popularity, though neutral tints were more favoured than the brilliant colours that brightened the dresses and wraps during the sombre winter months. Laco retained its place in the affection of well-dressed women, and scarfs of the same material as the dress, with contrasting linings made a smart finish to many frocks. As tor colours, brown, in all its lighter tones cream, ecru, cafo au lait, cinnamon—was first favourite, with black or blame and white as a good second. Hats which, generally speaking, were not as festive looking as the dainty dresses, were much larger and big bunches of flowers reappeared frequently as trimming, wliile many beautiful ostrich plumes added a .no to of dignity and grace to their wearers’ toilettes.
