Tito way's of the American people in regard to lhhny things arc usually reckoned by the mbre t tolid Britisher as freakish. A recent visitor to Honolulu told a “(Jisb'ofiie Times” reporter fliat he happened to hit Honolulu during a carnival week. One of tlie stunts' put on was to place lads in charge of the various civic activities for a day. There was a lad in charge of the municipal offices, another lad' took over the city’s police, and still another lad cook over the city’s traffic. And so on. These lacls had, of course, had some preparatory training, and they carried out their duties in a remarkably capable manner. It was not difficult to see, added the visitor, that tlie people \ver» justly proud of their juvenile •temporary administrators. Ho had learned, too, that on that particular dayq the people were most careful to be on their very best behaviour.

It is tlie opinion of a New Zealander who recently toured Great Britain that quite a wrong impression exists in tho Dominion lyith reference to the amount of unemployment,, at Home :• arid' the methods thrift, arhvih vosie to deal with it. rejnai-ked to a “Gisborne Times” reporter last week that the word “doles,” for instance, should to-day not be used.' Immediately after tlie close of file Great AVar, it was quite true that the weekly-payment; to the workless were in the nature of doles. But now the fund;: frorii which the out-of-work Jjayineiits were inade was only partly s'llbscribed to by' the Government. The fact of the matter was that workers, employers and the Goverment all contributed to the fund, find, if a man found l.iinself out of work; he liad a right to findhcial help. Asked as to the extent of -unemployment at Horne, he said that no doubt official figures were correct: But on journeying about, one did not see a great hiany of -tlie workless, In the queries outside tlie so-called “doles” offices, it was . noticeable that a great proportion of those waiting their turn were somewhat elderly.
