There can be no doubt that basket hall as a suitable game for girls is steadily gaining popularity. Proof positive of this is the tact that on Thursdav afternoon a team of players ot the Temuka Y. AY. Basketball Club leib by car, under the ebaperonage of Airs J. T .Smart, vice-president, to play a mateb ivith the St. Andrews Club, Ashburton. The game was played m the field in the Borough School grounds. The teams were very evenly matched, and after some hard playing the game resulted in a win for St. Andrews by 2:2 points to 18. Aliss Swap refereed the name .in a very capable manner. Afterwards the Temuka team was entertained at tea. PICTURES TO-NIGHT. “Beating the Game,” Tom Moore’s latest attraction, .will be shown at Temuka to-night. It is one of the most brilliant stories that the popular lom has ever appeared in. An exceptionally good Sennetb comedy is among the supports, which also include a Pathe Gazette and Topical. EUCHRE BARTY AND DANCE. On Thursdav evening a euchre party and dance were held in the Parish Hal under the auspices of the Mechanics Institute, for the purpose of augmenting the building fund. The gathering proved to be one of the most successful held this season. At the conclusion of lire games the prize winners wei'e Mrs James Fisher and Air AVorboys, the consolation prizes going to Aliss Abbot and All' Lyons. A splendid supper was then dispersed bv the ladies, . after which dancing was indulged in, to music provided by Airs Aturray Smith (piano), and Air Fraser (violin). Alt: j. T. Smart, president of the Institute, took occasion to express the commit-tee-.s pleasure at seeing such a large attendance. He also thanked the ladies’ committee who had organised the evening. and supplied such an excellent supi.ki- .mi-1 also iho musicians.
