HITCH ABOUT SPEED

FERRY STEAMER’S LACK

PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM * WELLINGTON, Tuesday.

Two months ago the Eastbourne Borough Council’s new ferry steamer arrived, but it lias never been put into commission.

Tho vessel caunot reach the stipulated speed, and though various alterations have, been made, it is still half a knot or so short of the specifications. In other respects tho vessel satisfies

requirements. The Council refuses to pay the fun price and proposes to deduct £250 for every tenth of a knot tho steamer is short of 13J knots which wore contracted for. The builders refuse to lease her till the full money is paid, contending that the speed is a matter for future adjustment. The hitch is a great disappointment as it was specially desired to obtain a vessel of a speed superior to tho present boats. The latter are also waiting for an overhaul, which cannot take place till (he new bon I is in commission. Effons are still being made to arrive' ai a compromise.
