He immediately reported the facts to the racing authorities. By Cable —Press Association —Copyright. LONDON, May 29. As a result of the stewards’ inquiry the Hypatia filly was disqualified in connection with the race at Gatwick, which was awarded to the Muguette colt.
The nearest New Zealand parallel to the Hypatia case cabled from London was the Zemlia-Ingoda affair at Christchurch a good many years ago. The late Mr D. Rutherford purchased from Mr J. F. Reid two fillies by Stepniak, one being named Zemlia and the other Ingoda. They both ran in a two-year-old race at Riccarton and one of them won. Then the allegation was made that, the two youngsters had become mixed, and that Zemlia was really Ingoda. On the evidence of the breeder the club decided that a mistake had been made and the race was awarded to the Second horse. The names of the two fillies were thereupon transposed and Ingoda (previously Zemlia) won some good races before she was sold to go to Victoria, where she produced the last Melbourne Cup winner King Ingoda. Officially the identity c-f the two horses was settled by the decision of the stewards, but there are still a few people who aver that the owner was right and the breeder wrong.
