Mr F. J. Rolleston, AI.P. for Timaru, is at present confined to his bed, but. expects to be about again shortly. Out of sixty applicants, Mr C. Illingworth, Okakune town clerk, was appointed to a similar position m Taihape. Dr’ Muriel Bell, house surgeon at the Dunedin Hosptial, has been appointed assistant to tfie Professor of t/liysioiogy at Otago University. The Surveyor-General (Air W: T. NeilJf, is at present in Christchurch on , a visit of inspection to the local Lands and Survey, Office. Mr H. fl. Greer. assistant transport clerk at the 'limaru railway station, has been appointed stationmaster at Groatford. Mr AV. H. Hagger (Conciliation Commissioner), returned to Christchurcn by yesterday afternoon's express. Mr C. E. Morris, manager for Messrs Dalgety and Co., .Ltd., at Napier, is staying with lUr and Airs Charles Verity (Craiginore Downs). Mi H. F. Nieoll, of Ashburton, will leave to-day for Wellington to join. ' the Rotorua, on a trip to the Old Country. Air J. L. Haley, of- the Timaru goods office, has been appointed assist-ant-stationmaster at hairne, and will commence his new duties on June 1. Air A. Sando, manager of the “Dominion” and the “IN. Z>. Farmers’ Advocate,” Wellington, arrived m Christchurch yesterday, on a business visit. Mi- C. E. Wheeler, the well-known Wellington journalist, is at present on a visit to Christchurch. He is acting as omcial reporter at the conference of the New. Zealand Dental' Association. Timaru dentists wlio have gone to Cliristcnureh, in connection with the conference now being held there, are Dr Gunn, and Aiessrs C .H. Gresson, Waslibourn and Fraser. Air F. W. Wait was on Alonday, unanimously re-elected chairman or the Ashburton Electric Power Board. His honorarium was increased from £2U6 to £3OO. Air William Nicholson (Hampden), representing the Aloeraki riding for twenty-five years, has been elected chairman of the Waitaki County Council.
Air R. S. Forsyth will sever his connection ' with the N.M. and A. Company to-day, and will take up his duties with the Meat Control Board tomorrow.
, Mr W. J. Poison, Dominion President of tlie Farmers’ Union, .left Wellington last night, and will arrive in Timaru by the express from Christchurch this morning. Mr Charles Berkeley, who has been the touring representative of the J. C. Williamson “Peep Show” . Company, left Wellington last night' to join the Emelie Polini Dramatic Company in a similar capacity. Picton’s centenarian, Mr William Eorteseue, celebrated his 105th birthday last week. Mr Eorteseue was born on May 24, 1917, in Devonshire. He is still" hale- and hearty, and retains all his faculties. Mr G. Jobberns, M.A., has been appointed by the Canterbury College Board of Governors to act as locum tenehs for Professor R. Speight, Professor of Geology at the College. Professor Speight will leave shortly for Australia as the Board’s representative at the Pan-Pacific Science Congress.
Mr' 0. N. Gillespie, ,has resigned from the staff of the New .Zealand Picture Supplies, Ltd , after seven years’ service. Mr Gillespie, who controlled the exhibitions and publicity side of the New Zealand Picture Supplies, has been appointed general manager for New Zealand for the First National Film Exchange. The Prime Minister will be in Dunedin for the winter show. Two important deputations will wait on him during his stay in that city. One from V the Otago University Council will press the claims of the dental and medical schools, and another, representing various societies and public bodies, will voice the city’s demand for a post office.
Mr A. Aubrey, general manager for Australasia for the Southern Cross Assurance Co., and Mr Cahill, general manager for New Zealand, were in Timaru on Saturday, last inspecting the Timaru branch. As a result of the visit Mr F. H. Hewett, South Canterbury manager, has been transferred to Melbourne on promotion. Mr Bromley, Christchurch manager, is at present in Timaru. Among those who are taking positions on the new Sydney daily newspaper to be started by “Smith’s Weekly” are three capable and well-known Wellington journalists —Messrs Marshall (of the “Dominion”), Natusch (“Evening Post”), and D. Freeman (“New Zealand Times”). Another Wellington journalist, Mr R. Y. White, formerly of the “Dominion” and latterly of “Hansard,” has joined the staff of the Sydney “ Sun.” Some South Island journalists will also join the staff of “Smith’s Daily.”
A complimentary social * was tendered to Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P. for Dunedin South, by his constituents on the attainment of his political majority on Tuesday night. Among those present were Messrs T. M. Wilford, Macpherson, Horn, Masters, Ransom and Parelle, M.P.’s, and the Hon. M. Cohen. Mr Sidey was presented with an illuminated address, signed by his committee on behalf of his constituents. The address bore testimony to his faithful record as a member of Parliament and representative of the district for 21 years. Mrs Sidey was presented by Mr' Sidoy’s ladies’ committee with a pair of greenstone carver rests, and the President of the Southern Football Club, with which Mr Sidey has been associated for 27 years, presented him, on behalf of the club, with » small gold football.
