WELLINGTON’S NEW STATION. INITIAL CONTRACT SIGNED. PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Wellington has long been waiting fo< a. new railway station, but the work has been hung up year after year through the necessity of reclaiming a large area from tiie Marbour to provide the room required for a building and yards commensurate with requirements. The negotiations between the Government ancL the Harbour Board, spread’ over several years, have at last come to a head and an agreement arrived at, but even then a further delay occurred over the preparation of the plans and other preliminaries. The first real step towards the at tual beginning of the work was taken today, when a contract was signed for the construction of a concrete letaining wail. Tlie successful tenderer was C. F. Fulley, and the sum involved is no less than £181,794 15s. Seven other tenders were received, ranging up to £316,729. . ■ , , Even now it will be six months before the work actually begins, and it is expected to take four years in all to bund the wall. The filling in will be done with the spoil dredged from tlie harbour. This is the ninth contract Mr Pulley lias carried out for the Harbour Board. The price compares very favourably with the engineer’s estimate.
