Sydney: Against Rebels: A meeting in the Domain, held under UlO auspices of Protestant bodies and the Grange Lodge, protested against tile inaction of tho Commonw ealtli Government in respect to Irish republican envoys. An opposition meeting convened by the Irish beU-Detcnuination League, protested against attempts to stiilo free speech.
Bad ’Phones: Speaking to the motion at the Commercial Travellers' Association Conference, in favour of improved telephone facilities, tho speakers doclared that the New South Wales service- was the worst in tho world. One said he was living a few miles from Sydney and 110 could get quicker communication by visiting the city than by using the telephone. An Old Criminal: Officials are convinced that the mystery surrounding tho seusational escape of the notorious convict, Frederick Clarke from Geelong Gaol in 1889 has been solved. While pnsmiers were clearing the prison ground they discovered a largo brass Uov, which proved to be the mastorkev for every lock in the gaol at the tiiiio of Clarke’s escape. Clarke was transported to Van Dienian’s Land in. 1817, and died in Geelong at the ago of fifty-seven. Ho had a record of sentences totalling eighty-seven years for various crimes.
