THE MAYORALTY

Unless events move quickly within the next iew days, it looks as it Timaru',s .Mayor will be elected unopposed. A few days ago we published a paragraph ‘to the effect that Mr U. J. Italics ton the re tiring Mayor, now a Member of Parliament, would be asked to reconsider his former decision of retiring. To-day, onr readers will notice that a. representative deputation wailed on M.r Kolleslou in ask him to contest the- Mayoralty, and that lie has given his iiual answer, leaving '{.Vmncillor (I. J. Wallace, the lonely aspirant to the Chief Magistracy, despite rumours that Councillor An,stay was a likely contestant. Wo regret that Mr It olios ton fools that his Parliamentary duties will make- it impossible to carry on the work of the Mayoredly, for he is a man who has been all bis life an asset to Timaru : an earnest worker in whatever cause he lias championed : a -public nnm who scorned in do anything that was not "white. ' As has been said be-

fore about Air Pnllesloa, -he did not enter' local and higher pnbtics for the sake ol being a ] optician. glorious though lhai honour may I •• ! In his capacity ns Mayor, lie lias always had the Interest of Timaru at hwiri, all bough, as lias been I ho case with nianv public mwi. disgi untied <'h’n!“a-s h"' <• nia.b I" s path not n 1 a \one s! ’ aw a w it It roses, lie would June been

elected by a big margin bad be ! consented to stand again lor the ( Mayoralty, and would have continued to perform yeoman service for Timaru. Now, since bo lias refused to stand again, the public of Timaru must look for a worthy successor. Could not a representative deputation, we suggest, without delay, approach Mr G. S. Cray, with a request to him to stand ? Quick action is necessary.
