BOWLING.

PROPOSED NEW CLUB. IN THE NORTH END. An enthusiastic meeting of howlers was held in Hutchison’s last night for the purpose of discussing a proposal to form a bowling club in the north end of the town. 'There were between twenty and thirty present, and Hr Richard Shillito was voted to the chair. Mr Shillito explained that he was vice-president of the Kia To a Bowling Club, aud that he had no intention of leaving it. At the same time he would like to see a club formed in the north end of the town, and he, as well as other old howlers, would give it all the support, they could. Mr B. Manning said there had been talk of forming a howling cl nb in the north end of the town for the past three years, and it had been decided to call a meeting in order to give the proposal definite shape. There would bo no difficulty in getting a. membership of at least fifty to start with. Several .sites for a green were under offer, and he thought -that a committee should be set up to inspect these. The chairman said that the north end of the town was going ahead, there were plenty of leisured men there, and he had no doubt that a club could bo formed on a sound basis. It was very important that a good site for a green should he chosen; if they did not get a good green the club would he a failure. Mr R. H. Bissett asked for information as to the cost of a green. Mr Currio (West End), said that his club started off with only thirty members. Ho estimated that to huv a site and make the green would cost about £6<X). Probably the Bank would advance the money if members guaranteed the account. • That was how the West End club had been started. Mr R-. E. Provan (West End), endorsed and amplified Mr Currie’s remarks, and said that the West End Club had been fortunate in getting a great deal of free labour. He had no doubt that if a. club were formed in the north end, the members would receive plenty of support. Mr Moyes (Tim ant), also gave some advice concerning the selection of a site and the formation of a green. Before they bought a section, they should secure hacking to the extent of at least £SOO. Dir Roland Watson said that as one who was responsible for calling the meeting that night, his idea was to get all the information possible, and secure names of all who were willing to become members of a North End Club. Until -they knew what support they were likely to get, it would be unwise to sot up any committee. • After they had obtained an idea of the support they wore likely to get another meeting could be called, and it would be soon enough then to set up committees.

Mr G. Hadlee (Kia Toa), endorsed this view.

The chairman expressed the opinion that they would be unable to get members unless they wero able to give some idea of a site and tho approximate cost of a green; they must have something definite to put before prospective members. A Finance Ccnnnitteo should bo set up to inquire into the host methods of financing the proposed club, and there should bo a Ground Committee to inspect sites. ~ Mr Manning read the names of 25 men who had promised to join a North End Bowling Club; and lie moved that •a site selection .committee and a finance committee should he sot up.

Mr Bissett said that one committee would ho sufficient, and Mr Manning move'd that one committee bo set up to go into tho question of finance and sites.

The motion was carried, and the following were elected a committee: — Messrs B. Manning, 11. Watson, H. Broadhead, H. Berry, C. Johnstone, E. Henshaw, IT- Simpson and W. Morgan. In reply to a question Mr A. Thoreau said that the Park Club had been run for a good many years a.t a cost of £4O a year, the chib then having a membership of 40. The £4O went to pay the caretaker. The Park green had been made by the Borough Council at no cost to the club. The membership cf the Park Club had never exceeded 45. Mr Moyes said that a private bowling club could not be run for less than £l2O a year. It was suggested that possibly tho Borough Council would form a green in the North End Park and allow howlers to use it in the samo way that tho Park green is used. Mr Currie said that the proposed new club should have at least 65 members in order to get along comfortably. Various other details were discussed, and tho meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to tho chairman and the members of the various howling clubs who had attended and given valuable information.
