Glass vases which ars much stained should not bo cleaned with a gritty substance, as this may scratch them. The best cleaner for this purpose is bran, to which some water has been added. Hold the band over the mouth of the vase and shake it vigorously, and eventually the glass will be perfectly clear. It- is quite common to find among cinders in a grate an orange-coloured substance. This should be collected and crushed to a fine powder. The material, which i 9 commonly known as “crocus,’’ is most uscfeul for imparting a fine polish to stool. It should be rubbed on m a.dry state, and the article can tlvcn be polished with a leather or soft cloth. Footwear which has been worn in the ram is not easy to polish. No difliculty will be experienced if bofore the ordinary polish is applied the leather is very slightly moistened with a little paraflin. It will ( then be quite as good as new. A quick and effective way of cleaning knives is to rub them up and down a times in the earth. Good quality knives should invariably be cleaned with good quality charcoal. j ] f you wipe your knives immediately' \ after use it will only require a rub or so j to clean them. . For cleaning pearl handled knives use ver_v fine salt, and polisli with a. chamois leather. After years of wear many knives become thin at the top and dangerous.
