MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
TIMARU, THURSDAY, JANUARY 18.
(Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) SPEEDING. There was a large number of charges against motorists for exceeding the speed limit in various parts of the town, the fines imposed varying according to the speed testified by the Police witnesses. The following were fined: —A. W. Bennison, 20s and costs; H. Boardley, 30s and costs (convicted and discharged for having passenger on carrier of motor oycle); W. H. Candy, 20s and costs; T. Conlon, 20s and costs; Pierre Fusy, 20s and costs; Win. Herron, 20s and costs; B.; Irving, 20s and oosts; J. S. Langford (two charges), 20s and costs; J. M. McVeigh, 10s and costs; J. M. Morrison, convicted and discharged; S. N. Richards, 20s and oosts; M. Swaney, 30s and costs; B. VC-' McArtney, 30s and costs. UNATTENDED cars.
There were more charges than usual against motorists for leaving motor cars unattended in town at other than parking places. The Magistrate, in consequence of his former stated intention, refused to fine strangers to Timaru for leaving cars unattended, until notices were placed in prominent plaoes indicating parking places. The following cases were dealt with:—N. A. Cameron, 10s and costs; A. A. Coleman, ordered to pay costs; b. Connolly, 10s an'd costs; H. L. Dyer, ordered to pay costs; H. Elworthy, 10s and costs f G. Halt 10s and costs; J. R M. Lemon, lan Mackenzie, M. J. Meehan, H. A. Munro, ordered to pay costs; Timaru Rhodes, R.Rndtman, T. Sheen, 10s and oosts; L. Shepherd, ordered to pay costs. CYCLING WITHOUT A LIGHT. T. Dodd pleaded guilty td cycling at night without a light. He stated tha on the night in question, he went with a friend for a run. His friend had a light and he did not think he would require one. In any case it was a bright moonlight night. _ A fine of 6s and costs was imposed. CROSSING A CROSSING.
j. C. Guinness (Mr V. D. Campbell) pleaded guilty to driving over the railway crossing at Washdyke when an engine was within half a mile. Senior Sergeant Fahey stated that defendant passed over the crossing when a train was within 25 yards ot 111 Mr Campbell explained that there was no intention on the part of defendant to ignore the signal of tho man at the crossing. The fact was that defendant misunderstood the crossing keeper, and thought the latter was ■waving to him to come on instead of signalling to the tram. , Defendant discovered the mistake wneu i- vas to rmIL.UP
