GALA DAY AT HOOK.

SPORTS AND GYMKHANA. After a lapse of nearly fifteen years the annual sports and gymkhana at Hook were revived yesterday in the field adjoining the Hall. The weather was ideal, bright sunshine tempered by a pleasant breeze prevailing throughout the day. Residents of the surrounding districts took full advantage of the welcome break in the weather to participate In an enjoyable day’s outing, quite a large number arriving from Walmate during the afternoon. The programme offered a pleasing variety of events, some of the novelty items creating considerable amusement. The fieid events wero all contested in fine sporting spirit, the bright sunshine being no doubt responsible for the extreme good humour shown by both spectators and competitors. Great credit is due to the ladies of the district, for the bountiful luncheon and afternoon tea, served with typical country hospitality. Messrs H. Mason and C. F. Rose, chairman and secretary respectively of the sports committee, are to be congratulated on the success of their initial venture. Future events of

this nature In the Hook district will be looked forward to with considerable interest. The officials responsible for the arrangements were as follows: —Messrs H. Mason (chairman), Rathgen, Richards, Meyer, Tasker, Todd, Greelish, Haynes, Tiffen, Shaw, J, Bingham, C, Cochrane, T. Cochrane, T. Wilson, and C. F. Rose (hon. secretary). Among the many visitors from outside districts were Mr J. Bitchener, M.P., and Messrs S. I. Fltoh (president), R. R. G. Rattray and A. McLauchlan, directors of thft-Wai-mate Caledonian Society. The gate takings were £26 17s 103. Details of the sports SHEEP DOG TRIALS (judge, Mr M. Elliott) —S. Kennedy’s (Waimate) Young Boss, 1; J. SmilUe’s (Waitaki) Bob, 2; W. Bell (Hook), 3. The judge remarked that the work done was well up to standard, especially considering that the majority of the competitors were not trial dogs. CLAY PIGEON SHOOTING. —In the first choot W. Bean, A.
