DR CRUICKSHANK MEMORIAL.
In connection with tho Dr Cruickshank Memorial,, tho sculptor has just completed tho figure -which will be erected early, next week. The unveiling ceremony is to take place on Thursday afternoon, January 25, at 1.30. It is hoped that the Hon. C. J. Parr, Minister of Health, will bo present to unveil tho memorial. Amoilg the speakers will be Dr Siodeberg, of Dunedin (a fellow student of th© lato Dr Cruiclcshank), the Hon. E. H. Clarke, of Palmerston, representing Palmerston friends, Mr J. Bitehener, M.P., arid, Mr C. E. Bromner. WAIMATE RACECOURSE. A meeting of the trustees of the Waimate racecourse was held in the A. and P. rooms on Tuesday afternoon. There were present—Messrs E. C. Studholme (chairman), A. S. Jones, J. H. Mitchell, J. W. Hayos, and Allan McPherson. . ' Messrs S. Tivomey (president), J. Donch, J. Mathieson, and J. Atwill, members of the Waimate Racing Club, waited on tho trustees with a request that the racecourse property should be leased to the Racing Club at the expiration of tho present tenant’s leas© in March.
Air Tivomey thanked Mr Studholmo for receiving the deputation, and stated that tho Racing Club wished to lease the whole of tho grounds, and instal a caretaker. Mr Fitch explained the terms of agreement, and said that if tho Club wanted to buy the present buildings, three months’ notice was necessary, but it was now too late as tho leas© expired in March next. Mr Matheson was of the opinion that if the buildings and hedge were removed, the site where Air Saunders’s house now stood lvould make a splendid position for viewing tho races. Air Twoiney contended that other clubs did not use their properties as dairy farms.' After somo discussion on rates, which had increased greatly during the last ten years, tho deputation withdrew. No decision was arrived at by the trustees and a further meeting will be held at a lator date.
PERSONAL. Dr and Airs Pitts are spending a short holiday in the south. Air \V. L\ Shrimpton, AVaimato, who is ’ attending Canterbury College, was successful in passing the first section of -die B.A. degree. At the annual examinations in December, Air Shrimpton won the College prize in economics.
